Severe nausea/can't drink anything 1 week post op

Recommended Posts

I am one week post op and for the past few days I'm having a really hard time tolerating anything. I can't even seem to get Water down without instantly feeling sick to my stomach. I haven't vomited yet but I've been close... I have been taking my nausea medicine but it's not helping.

I think I maybe dehydrated? Any opinions? I feel terrible.

The same thing happened to me. I was consistently nauseous for 5 days and I went to the ER 3x and begged for fluids because I could not eat or drink anything.

Then it just passed..

Poor thing. Your tummy had a serious trauma when 80% of it was removed and then stapled back together. It's freaking out, it's healing and it's not easy. I'm so sorry. The advice here seems to be good. Try the anti-nausea pills if you have them. Call your surgeon's office and tell them. Also tell them you haven't been able to drink for 3 days and you fear dehydration. THey might just send you to the ER.

Are you logging in your Water? If so tell them just how few ounces you've had. Dehydration isn't good.

I agree with the previous posters. You have to watch for dehydration or you'll end up in the hospital. Call your surgeon's office ASAP.

In the mean time, have you tried drinking at different temperatures? Some people's stomachs prefer hot/warm drinks - warm Water, tea, broth, etc. Others prefer cold/icy drinks and popsicles. Warm in my experience was better.

I had severe nausea with dry heaves in the hospital with the medication they gave me for nausea! It was the worst thing!!! I could not drink without the feeling of being sick. When I got home I was still nauseous with meds, but when I would feel nauseous I would put a cold towel on my forehead or neck. I would sometimes sleep with it on my forehead.
To get my fluids in I had to find different options that would still make me nauseous but not severely nauseous. Prior to surgery I would only drink room temp Water, after I could only drink very ice cold water. Hot chicken broth was a life saver. I stuck with the things I could get down so I would not get dehydrated. After week 2 I was ok.

First as someone said contact your doctor asap. I couldn't drink any Water even an ice cube in the hospital made me vomit. I am into week 3. For me the only thing I could tolerate was no sugar added hot cocoa. I do better with warm liquids first thing in the morning.

Also I can do watered down apple juice and sugar free popsicles was my go to for a week.

Everyone is different you have to find what works for you. I ended up in the ER because I was a little dehydrated and my electrolytes were off which had my heart beating 150-170 which was scary. I am now on beta blockers so it is crucial to not wait and get the help you need from your doctors and dieticians.

Today was the first day I could sip a little propel water. Good luck!

PS Licking a little sea salt helped me when I felt nauseated. This also helped prior to surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
