Alcohol? Happy 21 [emoji322]

Recommended Posts

Here in just a short few weeks I'll be turning 21, also going to be 3 months post op. I'm not a big alcohol drinker anyway.. but I'm going to a casino for the night for my birthday. Can I have a glass of wine while I'm there? How fast do you get drunk?

Sleeved

I believe most surgeons (but check with yours for sure) say to wait at LEAST 6 months. That's how long I waited. Alcohol is harsh on the stomach and empty calories. Trust me, I still have a beer or spirit every so often. So I'm not saying ever again. But again, check with your surgeon/NUT. How fast you get drunk is dependent on each person. With the sleeve, your stomach empties of liquids much quicker, so the alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream faster. You will feel it much faster than you did before. Pre-op, it'd take 6-9 shots of Patron Silver for me to even feel a buzz. Now it takes 1 on an empty stomach, 2 if i'd had anything to eat in the last hour or two. Pace yourself. Do not take shot after shot or drink after drink.

I'm 3 months post op and having a girls weekend around the time of your birthday (happy birthday!!!). My friends and I only get together once every few years and there's always a lot of drinking involved. I feel like I'm going to feel left out/ not as merry. I thought about drinking a glass of wine each day (sipping slowly), but then I also think why even go there? Will I want more and not have the best judgment? So, I'm pretty sure I'll abstain and just keep reminding myself that it's the company not the alcohol that makes the get together special.

Our surgeons at Kaiser told us NEVER to drink alcohol again because of the risk for ulcers as well as the HIGH risk of changing your addiction from food to alcohol. Of course people still will from time to time. Something I've learned through this process is that not many things affect me the way that it does to the majority of people who have been sleeved. The only thing that I am similar to the majority on is alcohol after sleeve hurts. I've drank(not a lot) on two occasions since being sleeved 12/19. First vodka drink with club soda was okay but gave me mild heart burn. The second drink was vodka based but no carbonated drink and my esophagus and stomach BURNED after the tiniest sip. You may be different from my experience so I guess you'll have to try, just be cautious.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
