Why can I eat more than most?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I had RNY on 1/23/17 so I am 6 weeks out. I've notice that I can eat a lot of salad... my papaerwork says not to eat more than 4-6 ounces at this point, but I'm able to eat like 5oz of salad. With other things I can usually eat about 4oz and I don't get that full feeling, but I am satisfied so I do not eat more that what I'm allowed. I'm just a little worried because I'm in the "regular foods" stage and I'm seeing most people say that their punch only holds 2-3oz. Should I be concerned?

I had surgery feb. 1 2017 and I feel the same way. I cant eat regular food yet, in the soft stage still. but I too can eat about that amount. Not sure if it is because i drink too much Water too quickly and stretched my pouch already or what.

I've been looking into that because I thought that might have been my problem too, but everything I'm seeing says liquids cannot stretch your pouch. So I have no idea

I'm thinking our pouches weren't made as small as others that still feel full on 4oz I'm trying to be more concerned about what I eat adding lots more veges and lean Protein. I'm happy where I am so far but have learned we still have to be strict with our food choices, I wasn't so strict in the last few weeks and haven't lost much, will see how I do with better choices.

@Nana1222 hmm I'm gonna ask about that at my next appointment. I honestly thought all pouches were the same size.

salad is tricky from a volume perspective. Here's my gross thinking... 4 oz of chewed up chicken still takes up pretty much the same volume as 4 oz of intact chicken. Salad on the other hand when chewed no longer takes up the same volume as it did while on the plate. The structure breaks down, Water released, and it withers.

Maybe experiment with a meal with just solid meat Protein and see how much you can comfortably hold?

I am 8 days post surgery and also wonder about the size of my pouch. I am the after surgery phase diet - liquids. Right out of the hospital I am able to sip 8 oz. of the chicken Protein broth or shakes within 10 minutes. Fluid intake is beyond 64 oz. per day. Is it fluids go straight through?

@BevLee I've read that liquids go right through and shouldn't stretch your pouch, but even now at 6 weeks out it takes me 2 or more hours to drink a Protein Shake and I get really full. That's just not the case with foods for some reason. Luckily I have an appointment with my surgeon's practitioner tomorrow, so I'll definitely be asking lots of questions

Lol, I do not care for the Protein Shakes so try to get them over with. I do like the broth with unflavored Protein. It amazes me how I have no uncomfortable feeling since I now have a pouch of a stomach. I am grateful as it could be the complete opposite or worse.

Wait till you start to eat normal again even at the purée stage ... you will soon know what full is lol
I was thinking when I was on the liquid stage that I wasn't sleeved cause I had no real restriction at all.. I had no problems sculling Water either. But solids is s different balll game

I am so happy to be reading these things! I'm 5 days out RNY. I do not feel any restriction yet as fluids seems to just "go right through" as well. I'm constantly hungry and can not wait to be on puréed diet! Liquids just do not seem to fill me like I wish they would! :(

I had surgery 2/1 just had my 6wk check up. NUT said meals should be around 3/4 c of chewed up food lol. Not sure how to measure that. But she said 2 c of salad is about 1/4 c chewed. So can eat up to that but eat 2 bites of Protein to 1 bite veggies

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
