I am just curious what others were told about Vitamins after RNY. I am having surgery on Wednesday and want to make sure I am doing everything right. The nutritionist I went to see told me:

Vitamin B-12 (1) SL every day .....BUT these come in different dosages and I don't know which one to pick

Flinestone chewable Vitamin with Iron (1) every day

Then, when I start soft food I need to add:

Calcium 500mg every day and Centrum Chewable every day.

Does this sound right? I have read a few things on here that are making me question whether I need to add more. Please advise.

My NUT does not recommend store bought Vitamins. She told us WLS patients only absorb 25% of Regular Brand Vitamins.

You would have to take 4x as much of store brand to get full absorption.

I take:

1 capful of Nutrametrix or Isotonix Multivitamin with Iron (These are mixed with Water and are 95% absorbed within 15 minutes)

1 capful of Nutrametrix or isotonix Calcium (mixed with the Multivitamin)

2 - 250mg Bariatric Advantage chewable Calcium twice a day spread out at least 4 hours apart (for a total of 1375 Calcium) American Society for Bariatric Surgery recommends 1375 - 1500 daily.

15g Bariatric Advantage Iron daily

Bariatric Advantage sublingual B12 every other day

Bariatric Fusion 4/day chewables. No need for extra anything. They have all that you need. Recommended by my surgeon after my rny and I'm 7 mos. out, exceeded all my goals and my bloodwork is excellent. Very affordable and comes in a bunch of flavors, very low carb/sugar as well.

I had RNY gastric bypass almost 4 years ago. The surgeon's office directions on Vitamins were:

* Three Flintstone's complete chewable Multivitamins daily

* 65 milligrams elemental Iron daily for menstruating women

* 1500 to 1800 calcium citrate daily. [be careful on this one because cited dosages on the bottles are generally by two tablets not on a single table]

* 500 to 1000 micrograms sublingual B12 daily or 1000 mcg IM injection once monthly.

* 100 mg Thiamine (vitamin B1) daily for one year following surgery and then weekly thereafter.

Vitamin chemistry is important for absorption. Calcium supplements should be calcium citrate. There are also different chemistries of B12. I use the sublingual B12 and was told to use methylcobalamin. You cannot use a time-release version of B12. If you are taking iron supplements, it must be ferrous sulfate for the best absorption. gummy vitamins are not absorbed properly and should be avoided.

It is important to put a 2 hour separation between the vitamins that contain iron and those that contain calcium. So in my case I found that what works best for me is to take the iron supplements just before bedtime. I put my vitamins in a weekly pill container. I have one container for the morning and one for the night. And I use a very small glass bowel for my calcium supplements. I put my calciums in the bowl in the morning and take them throughout the day. If I am up and about I put my calciums in a ziplock bag and carry them with me.

I've discovered that every surgeon and every nutritionist have their own opinions. Follow what your surgeon and your nutritionist tell you. Good luck, this is the best decision you've made - to get healthy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
