TMI Question for the Ladies

Recommended Posts

I have my surgery date and by my calculations, it will likely be "that time of the month." It's making me nervous. Did anyone experience this at the time of their surgery? I have my final pre-op appointment with the doctor in a couple of weeks and plan on bringing it up, but I don't wan to sound silly.

It won't be a problem. Ask the nurse when you are changing into the gown what they want you to do. I doubt a tampon will be a good idea because you may not feel like dealing with it after.

Even if you aren't having a period, many times one will start due to the trauma.

Definitely not a silly question!

When the nurse took me back for surgery prep, I told her and she gave me a pad and disposable panties. I wouldn't bother asking your surgeon about it.

Mine was to fall on my surgery date, however the pre-op diet threw my body off and I have yet to start and I'm 6 days pre-op.

I agree with berry, just let the nurse know the morning of the surgery when you're putting on your gown and they will help you out.

Got mine the day of surgery and they told me to put pad between my legs. It's not that bad. Alot people start after surgery cause of the after shock to the body.

Mine started 1 day before sx. They don't want you to wear a tampon during sx and will give you a pad and disposable panties. It is up to you what you use after sx and once you are back in your room. It has more to do with how much you can bend. I would throw tampons in your bag and if you can't use them the hospital has pads for you.

Mine started not too long after my surgery. And it was very very light. Normally it's very heavy. And it lasted 4 days (as opposed to 7). Mine was to almost end on my surgery.

I was lucky in a sense. I was worried, mine was supposed to start a couple days before surgery. I think the pre op liquid diet threw me off and I got it a couple days early. Luckily all was done before surgery. I usually luckily only go 3-4 days.

Mine started several days before surgery and I was so worried as my flow is pretty heavy. Like others mentioned, I was provided a pad and disposable panties! Best wishes

Got mine surgery day. Or the day night before. They do give you a pad and stretchy panties, but I had a catheter and that didn't quite work with the panties. So it was something of a mess but luckily my flow wasn't really heavy. It was all fine. Just keep pushing your little medication button and you won't really care [emoji3]

Mine started 2 days before surgery. Nurses were fabulous and understood I wanted to keep my own black panties on. I used a pad and was fine. Inconvenient? A bit... but they've seen it all!

It's funny, mine was also due around surgery date, which was June 2015 but I was starting menopause so who knew if I'd actually get it. I was prepared but it didn't come at all. I ended up having a hysterectomy in November. It was already on the table; in fact my gynecologist had me ask my surgeon if we could do both at the same time but it didn't make sense at the time.

I was in the middle of my cycle when I had surgery. They said no tampon, but let me keep my panties and pad on during surgery. They did ask to make sure I had cotton panties on, not nylon or spandex.

Don't worry about it.
I started 1 day after surgery which was 1 week before I was supposed to.
Mentioned it to the nurse and she said it is very common due to all the hormone changes the pre-op diet/surgery stress so they won't be surprised. They have pads and disposable panties available.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
