Caffeine effects post op?

Recommended Posts

I was a big coffee drinker, like 5 to 6 cups( 7-11 medium to large) per day, up until last Saturday. My doctor said I can drink coffee but obviously recommended Decaf but did not off limits caffeine. So this morning I tried some regular coffee and I must say it did taste way different to me..It also effected me pretty fast.

Anyone else have any experiences with feeling like you did Chrystal meth after drinking coffee??

Hmm, never tried meth, so... not sure! I abstained from coffee for a couple of months and it did taste odd at first. It tastes normal now. I only drink one cup/day; my surgeon says if I drink more, to replace it in equal parts with Water. I have HPB so I'm cautious about caffeine anyway. I do not notice that it makes me jittery, etc.

I was pretty much immune to caffeine and craved it. I could drink coffee 20 minutes before I went to sleep and fall right to sleep. This time it woke me up and hit me pretty good..And it did have a funny taste. Could have been the fat free milk I used..

I have stopped drinking milk since surgery. It tastes awful to me. I can eat dairy products (cheese) but I don't think I can ever drink milk again. It's just as well, my NUT suggests cream for coffee (no skim milk, 2% etc) because it has no carbs. I measure it (1 tbs in 8 oz of coffee) and it tastes heavenly in my java.

My tastes aren't different and nothing affects me differently, coffee or alcohol. Even though I rarely drink alcohol, I am not a light weight, my tolerance is still very high.

I was also a huge coffee drinker pre-op. After a couple of weeks of recovery I dipped my toe back in to the coffee world and ended up with awful stomach cramps and upset tummy. Thought it was the milk so eliminated it... had a Decaf and no worries. Turns out its too much caffeine for my system now. I'm not going to lie- I miss it, but I can live without the chronic runs!!

I've tried 2-3 times to drink regular coffee and each time left me feeling sick to my stomach. I was a massive caffeine junkie prior to surgery, but going those few weeks without anything has left me sensitive to it at this point. Decaf doesn't seem to bother me. Now I can get away with mixing a scoop or two of regular coffee in with the decaf to give a little kick but not enough to make me feel ill. Never got the jitters from having regular coffee. Just made me feel like crap for an hour or so.

I am 1 month out and I don't have any problems with regular coffee either. I only drink usually one cup in the morning anyway. I just know I can't count that towards my daily Fluid intake. The only thing that is hard to get used to is drinking it with Splenda. I usued to have my coffee with vanilla International Delight Creamer and that is the worst thing for you so I have cut that out completely. I am wondering if I have 2 tsp of regular sugar if it will negate all as well. I don't want to screw up, but I really do not like the aftertaste artificial sweeteners leave in my mouth. Anyone have any input?

Prior to surgery, I was a coffee addict. I needed it every morning & sometimes the afternoon.

3-weeks post op now & I don't like the taste. Coffee has that bitter, burnt taste to me. It's a shocker because I was a coffee snob (really picky & precise about my beautiful coffee). It's like saying goodbye to an old friend now that I don't like it anymore. We'll see if that changes as time goes on.

My cousin who had the VSG also recommended using some Premier Protein drink specifically the strawberries and cream or banana flavor as creamer.

I would like to encourage people to try Cold Brew coffee, Learn to make your own or buy it at Starbucks or the Concentrate at Trader Joe's and other stores.

You want a low acid coffee, at least for the first year, You want something smooth with low acidity. French Roasts are good for this and Trader Joe's sells a low acid French Roast if you want to brew coffee.

Also learning to drink and love black coffee really goes a long way.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
