Top 5 (or10) Things You Loved/Used After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of trying to prepare a little bit for post op (and the pre-op diet if there is one) I know everyone is different but, what 5 or 10 things were your favorite during this time?

Drink/Food, or other helpful things (compression?) thanks!!

Trader Joe's creamy Tomato soup
Whipped goat cheese with smoked salmon and a sprig of tarragon or dill
An electric blanket I use at my computer. I'm always cold.
New tennis shoes. Now mine are all too wide, and I can't work out in them.
A portable, battery-powered food scale. I got a small one off Amazon for about $12

I'm still pre-op (surgery in 5 days) so I'll keep an eye out for the post-op suggestions.

My main pre-op tip is to be prepared. Read up on what your prep requires (mine is shakes, fat-free-sugar-free liquids, and veggies). Fill your cupboard with whatever you can eat. Tea, flavoured Water, shakes, broth, etc. I bought some sugar free Jello but really don't like it. My fridge is crammed full of vegetables.

Something I wish I had done more of in advance was meal prep for the rest of the my family! Despite my pre-op diet restrictions, my husband and 5 kids still need to eat ;) And I really don't feel like cooking while I'm not eating... food has definitely taken a back seat in my priorities. If I were to do it again I would have gone into this with a freezer full of meals make life easier. Something to consider if you've got a family to feed.

sugar free hot chocolate made with milk, eggs scrambled with onions and peppers and mozzarella cheese, cheese stick pan fried (dry pan--it fries in its own reduced fat goodness) until crispy and dipped in salsa, Greek yogurt with mandarin oranges (cuties, etc) separated into it, Jello instant Sugar Free Chocolate pudding with extra unsweetened cocoa and Protein Powder whipped in along with the pudding mix

Just from my experience, I wouldn't load up on too much for post op. I did on some things and realized I couldn't stomach them after surgery.

My staples now (in soft food stage):

Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt, crush grape Water Enhancer, PB2 powder to mix with chocolate Protein Shake, string cheese, Jeannie-O turkey burgers.

I hate the shakes, so I am trying to get the biggest bang for my buck on Protein in food.... it is a chore to eat these days, so I don't want to waste bites if it doesn't have protein in it!

I've never enjoyed plain Water, so when I tried the Crush grape flavored enhancer... I was like a kid, it makes getting fluids in more enjoyable!!!!!

The amazing and frustrating thing for me was how much my tastes changed. All my plans went down the drain. I was left with a lot of Protein Shake mix that I could not use because it was seriously vile to me after surgery. I was unable to drink plain Water, when i have loved it all my life, and suddenly it would hit my stomach and make me nauseated immediately. Crystal Light was all i could drink. Now, at 6 months out, I am again able to drink water. meat is hard for me still, unless it is very moist. You will find your own new foods that help you through this.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
