What a great board! I'm learning from y'all and going to a seminar on Tuesday. I'm a little concerned that I won't qualify, even as private pay, because my BMI is *only* 35. I've had some knee pain a couple of times that required me to see an orthopedic surgeon but it subsided before I had to do anything drastic. I've also been advised to lose weight by my doctor when he couldn't find any medical reason for my fatigue. I guess I'll find out more soon.

Thanks and hi!

Hi Longhorn,

Sometimes if you have comorbidities, sleep apnoea, joint pain, diabetes etc they will accept you for surgery even with a lower BMI because it often helps relieve the problems. The seminars are usually really helpful and don't hesitate to ask questions while you are there.

Good luck

Welcome! If I were in your situation, I would study co-morbidities, the things that your weight affects. Knee problems are most definitely a co-morbidity, and I am pretty sure you may have others also.

Hopefully someone reading this has a list of co-morbidities and will post it for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
