Just started and have a BMI Question

Recommended Posts

I've just begun the process and don't have my consultation until the end of April. I just met the BMI with no comorbidities at 40.7 (they need 40) so when I asked the scheduler, she said that I don't really have any wiggle room with losing weight before my consultation.

It should be easy enough to maintain my weight until then, but my question is, once I begin the 6 month process prior to surgery, can losing weight hurt me at all? I know I have to meet with a dietician and such and I was under the impression I will have to diet then, as well. Are any of you aware of any cases of someone losing weight and having their insurance deny coverage in the 6 month period? I have UHC and the bariatric coverage is through Optum Health, if that helps.

I have UHC too, but your plan may be different. I'd suggest calling your insurance and see if you could lose approval if you lose weight and fall below the required BMI. If so talk to the NUT see what they suggest you do.

They will deny you. Just go along with everything but don't loose weight. Don't gain either. I was at 41 bmi so I was in the same boat.

Your doctors will want you to losr weight to show your motivation. Don't worry about your BMI falling below 40......the doctors will submit your very 1st weight you had with them

On my last apt dr said to not lose to much more only have like 8-10 pounds wiggle room need to stay at 40 BMI for insurance . They don't want to discourage weight loss . but insurance company's are shifty ! So I have keep an eye on the  scale and just maintain for now for rest of March ;(

Wow, so many conflicting answers. I am in the same situation. I calculated that if I lose just 1lb a month I will still be slightly above 40 bmi so that's my plan to make everyone happy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
