Food tastes horrible

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric sleeve on 2/8/17. I was doing ok with my Protein intake at first but now that I can have some soft foods, all food either tastes horrible or makes me nauseous. I hear this is a pretty common finding post gastric sleeve. I'm wondering from anyone else who has had this how long it lasted for them and what they did about it because I'm having a very hard time meeting my protein needs.

I stuck to mainly my Protein Shakes. I had the same problem where either things tasted blah or was very short lived. Chobani has a decent selection of flavors in their Greek yogurts. I also did a lot of cottage cheese with some pureed fruit to give it a bit extra. Also had some leftover Healthwise Protein Drinks and Soups from my 2 week pre-op phase that helped me get through it. Might want to try a few different soups assuming you can have those pureed/strained.

When I was going through this phase all my used to be favorite Crystal Light flavors tasted horrible. By about the third week they started tasting better, and now 5 weeks out they all taste the same as before. It defiinitely is a weird phase to go through.

We get a heightened/altered sense of taste after having this surgery. Apparently its quite common after having surgery to your gastrointestinal tract. Don't worry, it will calm down.

Glad I found this! I have been pinpointing that certain foods are causing me nausea which I didn't experience before advancing to soft foods. Pre op I was LI and I tried cheese stick twice this week & the nausea was just mind numbing. Today I elimitthe dairy & im one. Definitely a learning process!

I am 11 weeks post op now and this issue has resolved. Most of my nausea now comes as a warning sign from my body telling me I need to eat.

It started resolving for me around week 6 (this week) though my strongest aversions remain.

Same here, cannot stand any veggies or anything sweet, basically cannot stand anything if it is not meat or dairy. The surgery was 3/3/17

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
