Vitamins are killing my carb limit!

Recommended Posts

I'm still in my 6mo preop period and have been eating low carb (35g), high Protein. After getting used to the diet change, I decided to start taking the required Vitamins so i dont have to get into another new habit after surgery.

My concern is that the chewable vitamins total 17g of carbs. Thats half of my carb allowance per day just for vitamins!! It wont help to switch to pills because after surgery it will be difficult and they dont absorb as quickly.

Are there any low carb chewable vitamins that anyone is taking? I havent looked into liquid vitamins yet, so opinions on that would be great too. Ill be asking my pcp next week if the Vitamin carbs count toward my daily goal as well.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that processes food into essential Vitamins is cut away. As a result you body will no longer be able to manufacture it own Vitamins and you must rely on supplements. There are a variety of vitamins that must be taken after surgery. This is more than just a Multivitamin. It includes Calcium supplements, B12, B1 and perhaps Iron. As far as the Multivitamin, I was directed to consume 3 Flintstone complete chewable Multivitamins daily.

Since you are pre-op, you may not need any additional vitamins at this point. After surgery, your caloric intake will be so low that you will not need to worry about the calories in vitamins.

My dr. Recommended fusion chewables and they have only 1.3 gms. of carbs. Take 4 a day, 2 in the morning and 2 afternoon. No need to take anything extra, it's all in there. Just got my 6 mos. postop bloods drawn and they are amazing! Check them out here on BariatricPal.

My NUT recommends Nutrametrix Isotonix Multivitamin w/Iron and Calcium powders that you mix with Water.

They are 95% absorbed so I only have to take the Multivitamin once a day. I mix 1 capful of MV and 1 serving of Calcium together and drink it before leaving for work. I then take an extra Iron supplement and take 4 more (250mg) chewables of Calcium later in the day and B12 every other day. They are a more expensive up front than store brand Vitamins but since I only have to take 1 serving a day the cost works out to be about the same. I don't worry about carbs at all, just Protein. I follow my NUTs program of 5 meals daily that include a Protein serving at each meal plus 3 healthy fats, 2 multigrains and 2 fruits daily plus veggies.

Thank you for the replies! My dr. monitored diet consists of eating 800-1000 calories, 75-95g of Protein and 38g carbs. Hopefully I will be able to start my preop liquid diet at the end of March. After surgery, i will be limited, for sure. Ill also have the tool of surgery to help it not FEEL like such a limitation. Ill chat with my pcp next week and for now ill look into the ones mentioned.

You are eating candy disguised as Calcium supplements. I use chewables from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. Four tablets has 5 grams of carbs.

The Bariatric fusion chewable needs no additional Vitamins. It's complete with all you need and for bariatric patients specifically. Ends up being cheaper in the long run and easier to take just 4 a day than pills all day.

The first year u don't really need to worry about counting carbs. If u eat too much sugar or carbs you'll be on toilet. Take your Vitamins they're very important but don't worry about counting every gram. After 1 year if u still have weight to lose u can count carbs but it doesn't have to be super low.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
