3 week post op loss ?

Recommended Posts

Help please. I am 3 weeks post GB surgery & have been eating very small quantities of chicken breast & rice or Soup & 1/2 a slice of bread ....is this why I have only lost 14 pounds. I see people posting 20-30 lb weight-loss in the 1st month & wondering if my small amounts of carbs are contributing to my slow weight loss. Does anyone else eat carbs? What is the % of weight you are supposed to lose in the 1st month post gastric bypass ?

First off, during the first two months post surgery, your stonach is still healing. Please be sure to follow the prescribed diet.

Secondly, never weigh yourself the first month. Your body is in chaos and weight is a non-issue.

Thirdly, many of those with 30lb losses in any month are either very high bmi, or had complications. The average first month loss is 15lbs, and 10lbs thereafter. Normal for you might be higher or lower.

Stick to your plan, and you'll do well!

It's probably the dreaded 3-week stall, although I have never heard of any plan allowing rice or bread, especially this early.

I'm also 3 weeks post op and haven't lost for over 10 days now - all I have lost post op is 11 pounds. The only carbs I get are from almond/soy milk, and tofu occasionally when I add it to a shake.

Did you have bypass or sleeve? GB leads me to believe you had bypass but this is in the sleeve forum so wanted to be sure.

Do you have a nutritionist? If so I would be really surprised if they said breads & rice were okay to eat this early out. For most people those things are big no-nos. Mainly because they are carbs, they're pretty much devoid of nutritional value, and they typically do not sit well in the stomach so close to surgery.

Everybody is different in their weight loss, and while you may not be able to prove that the carbs you are eating are directly related to that I would get rid of them pronto.

@snapy17, I feel your pain. I am 3wks out and only down 11lbs. I am following the plan and I am still losing slow. I stop weighing myself everyday as I become depressed seeing the continued stall (7days thus far). I am just going to continue to follow the process and I know it will eventually come off. My advice is to decrease the carbs. I also here that 15lbs-20lbs a month is good. Oh, and I stop comparing myself to others. Best Wishes!

Just curious, are you walking too? Just reducing the food intake is only a part of the change. Make sure you are getting steps in each day. Try to walk for at least 5 minutes each hour of the day. This will get you an hour of walking over 12 hours. I also agree with waitingonthenewme, decrease the carbs. Don't look at the scale and focus how you are feeling.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
