Hello Everyone,

Just had my RNY on 2/16/17 and I am wondering it's safe to drink Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 unflavored Protein from GNC. The front desk associate recommended this one since it has 20g of protein but suggested 1 scoop only. The reason I am asking is because I was doing well with Premier Protein from costco before surgery but now I cannot stand them. I have chocolate, vanilla, and bananas and cream and they make me want to gag! If it's not safe, any suggestions as to any other brand and where I can buy it?

RNY: 2/16/17

Your surgery center might have guidelines. I think ours was a certain amount of Protein per serving, with < 5g sugar per serving.

That said, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury worked well for me. I went through a phase post-surgery for about a week where I couldn't stand the taste of any of it, but had to gag it down anyway for the Protein. Then went back to it tasting fine.

I hear really good things about Syntrax Fuzzy Navel; I keep meaning to try it.

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce Protein Shakes a day, in order to meet my Protein requirements. You do not have to like Protein Shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op.

The protein shakes that worked for me was Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme). I blended the powder with Water using a Ninja single serve blender and added in a half a banana to add flavor. But really everyone is different. The operative word is experiment. Find something that works for you.

I have a question for you guys. How many ounces of a proteina shake do you take at a time? how long do you take in drinking it??? I only have 4oz at a time. . Because im afraid to get to full. But i have never felt full with the shake. Just with fish or food containing Protein. But can i have more oz in one snack or meal pf the Protein Shake? How does that work? How does it fit in the stomach? How much do you guys have? Ok those were like a milloom questions LOL

Post op I didn't tolerate the shakes well, just too sweet. I'm 4 months post op and my main Protein before back on normal food was 10 oz 1% milk + 1 scoop GENEPRO flavorless Protein Powder (30+ grams of protein). Still my go to when I need protein.

Your shake is different than food. It doesn't fill your stomach the same as food. It's like Water, you can drink more than 8 oz of water right? Same for stake. Try your shake. Go slow, listen to your stomach and stop when it's done. So tell tale sighs are hiccups or feeling like a burp. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
