Pre Surgery Nerves and No Special Diet - Need Advice

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for gastric sleeve on March 6th with Dr. Corvala in Tijuana. If someone had told me I would ever consider this I would not have believed them. But, I am so tired of being overweight, having high cholesterol, hip pain, etc. that I have committed. However, Dr. Corvala has not required that I do any pre-surgery diet. I can eat anything up until 10:00 p.m. the night before surgery. Has anyone else done this and, if so, did it work out okay? I am really scared. I will be 65 in March and wonder if I am too old for this.

Every surgeon is different, but for your sake, I would do a self-imposed diet between now and then.

Starting tomorrow, drink 3-4 Protein Shakes a day and tons of calorie free liquids like Water. The shakes need at least 20g of Protein each and almost no carbs or fat. A scoop of Protein Powder in skim milk will work.

The day before surgery go on Clear Liquids only. No protein shakes. This is to clean out your intestines.

Then fast as per doc's instructions.

Cleaning out your intestines will help with comfort after the surgery. Your intestines take a day or two to wake up after anesthesia, and food sitting in them will create gas, etc.

Good luck!

Thank you Berry78 for your response to my post. I like the idea of doing some kind of prep to help my body get ready for this big change.

A whole lot of what berry said. There are a good number of people on here that weren't required to do any special diet prior to surgery, but I tell you what...I'm glad I had to. While it isn't the easiest diet in the world to follow it's good preparation for how things will be after surgery. Doing some prep work now will be a big help.

I should add, the clear liquids can and should have calories. Lots of broth and some regular Jello would be good. Too much sugar will make you sick, especially if you are diabetic.

Broth... get a whole chicken and simmer it for several hours in a large pot (include the giblets, carrots, celery, onions and the like) I add a tablespoon of italian herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Start with half a teaspoon of salt, a little goes a long way.

Drain and put broth in the fridge overnight. In the morning, scrape off the fat, and you have jello-like broth. Freeze the extra.. but you can drink as much as you want.

Meanwhile the chicken meat can be removed from the bones and turned into chicken salad or what have you...

Caution: If you are diabetic, do what you need to to stay at a good blood sugar range. Disregard the above plan if it is contraindicated by your personal health concerns.

Oh, and I realized that I said the shakes had no carbs.. you do need some each meal. The powder can have next to none, but the milk will have some. Aim for 40 grams of carbs a day.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
