Always cold after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 11-29-16 and have dropped 95 lb. Question to all: I'm always cold, and even more so after eating. Anyone out there have these symptoms?

YES!! I was sleeved 9/27 and in the last month I noticed that my hands are freezing as well as my feet at times. It mostly happens at night but it takes awhile to heat up. When I do I can go from warm to cold really fast

Always cold too! I was sleeved in Sept. I live in Wisconsin so it's been cold but I am always colder than everyone else.

Yes, it's normal. I have to keep my personal heater at work on even during the Summer. Fat is insulating and helps store body heat. The majority of the calories we eat is actually used to regulate our body temp and so when you restrict calories you are going to feel cold. Your body will eventually adapt.

Yep. I have a heated mattress pad on my bed, otherwise I would freeze at night.

Yup. Surgery in October and colder than everyone else almost all the time. I used to notice it when i was restricting calories or fasting pre surgery but this is crazy. I was always sweaty and couldn't wait for fall. Now i can't believe i can't wait til spring or summer.

Yes! A lot less insulation. I've gotten used to it, but a cold breeze reminds me to wear layers.

I haven't even lost much weight yet and I'm still getting freezing so easily.

Yep. 11 months out and still get cold. I use a heating pad on my lap at work sometimes and at home at night to warm up. Sometimes it's hard to just run into the grocery store if I don't have a sweater because it seems so cold in there. I think maybe it's getting better, but completely normal.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
