Am I crazy why am I hungry, depressed, not feeling full.....

Recommended Posts

I am 6 days out from surgery. I'm not really in any pain. Soar but thats about it. The thing that's freaking me out is I'm hungry, I feel like I'm drinking too much broth, Jello and Water. I'll have Soup or yogurt for a meal, and then I'm hungry not that long after. I'm sipping my water constantly, but the moment I smell my husband making dinner.. I'm starving. Then this morning... total breakdown. Is this normal??

Not normal as in being common place, but it is definitely not rare. This could be a good sign that you are going to have an easy recovery. I know that in the early recovery stage there is some lack of sensation in the skin as well as numbness in the stomach. It can be confusing to people because they are expecting a sensation of fullness but the signal is being sent because the stomach is numb.

This is one reason that measuring your food is so important early on. We can't rely on the sensation or signals being sent so close post op. There is also the confusion between actual physical hunger and habitual eating or boredom hunger.

Your stomach had the nerves cut, so it will be numb for a number of weeks. It is very important to measure your meals during this time so as to not hurt yourself. liquids go down easier/faster, but make sure you don't overload there either.

As for the hunger, perhaps it is "head hunger". That is much more common at this phase than actual hunger. Or you could be the rare bird that is actually hungry...

Things should improve as time goes on and you can eat real foods in a couple months. In the meantime, keep up with your liquids and try not to hang around the cooking if it can be avoided.

Good luck!

I've had hunger pains. My doctor told me some people do, some don't. In the beginning like you are I had to figure out that the hunger pains were really gas. If I made myself burb some it helped. Maybe some gas x would help. Good luck, and congrats on your surgery.

Hi, I was sleeved 2/15 and I am still really, really hungry too. I know it's real hunger because when I drink something (shake, Soup, milk) it goes away for a little while. But like you, I get hungry again really soon. I am so hoping that this hunger goes away at some point because I feel like I am on a starvation diet right now! It's been hard. Some people say we will fill fuller when we add solid foods. Let's hope that's true. Also, I was really emotional the first week and some people say it's because our fat releases hormones into our system when it is burned. Thus the flood of emotions. Hang in there! I am with you too!

I was sleeved Jan 12, 2017 and felt a lot of hunger the first few weeks. Some one recommended drinking Water whenever hungry, and that seemed to help. Plus, getting fluids in!! The hunger cravings seemed to get better once well into purée phase.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
