3 days out, remorseful, worried and depressed

Recommended Posts

I was very upset about the surgery for about a week. I was scared I'd never eat out socially again and that I'd always be in pain. The surgery is a huge shock to your body and more your mind because your life is changing. It's changing in a good way though. I promise you that if you just hold on, you'll feel great in a few months. Better than you ever thought.

Hey all,
just hoping to hear people's opinions. I'm hoping this is just a phase as I am so demotivated to do anything even work. My pain levels are pretty low but I'm so remorseful and depressed and I don't know why. I've lose about 18 pounds since the start of my pre op diet which is wonderful but I just can't shake this horrible feeling of dread.
Drinking shakes and Water is still pretty painful as I get slot of gas straight away but I'm struggling through it. Anyone have any idea when these sort of gas pains will stop? It's just constantly burping after I drink.

was anyone else depressed and remorseful afterwards and how long did it last ?

Any reply would be appreciated thanks

I haven't had surgery yet and am about a week into the first diet trial but I do understand the depression and anxiety. I think that's why I've put it off for so long. Just remember that you will have ups and downs. Find something small that you can do that will show you an accomplishment. It can be something as simple as cleaning a small section or competing another small task. Eventually they will get bigger. I hope this helps. When I get this way my mom always tells me to get out of my own head, easier said than done, but it helps.

I pushed myself to get out yesterday (even though I was feeling terrible) I stayed up kind of late to get nice and tired and had a much better sleep. Not perfect but was good. Woke up feeling a new man had a really good day today he got some stuff done. Most of my anxiety/depression was gone.

Im hoping I'm past the worst now :-) anyone reading this whos in the space position just hold on in there :-) it gets better

The night I came home from the hospital I felt uncertain, scared, remorseful and I wanted to undo it all. I had had barely any sleep. I felt that I was thrown out to the wolves when I left the hospital. I was still in extreme pain as far as gas pain. After I allowed myself to just sleep. Only getting up to take pain meds and a little Water, did I feel better. I woke up. My mind was clearer. I could see all the reasons that I wanted and needed to have this surgery. I seen all of the things I will be able to do with my kids from now on. And it seemed, that I just need to take a breath, make a written schedule and everything would be fine. And it has been great. I still get gas pain when I eat. But I just keep walking. My surgery was this last Thursday the 23rd. When I started drinking the Protein Shakes was when I finally got more energy and didn't feel like sleeping all of the time. You can do it!!

Depression is normal. If it continues once you begin solid foods, I would join a WLS suppirt group (one that is a therapy session, not an online group).

You will regain energy. Right now, you aren't getting any nutrients to fuel your body, so you're running on fumes. From the sound of it...gas fumes. [emoji3]

I pretty much slept the first two weeks. It all gets better with time. I am nine months out & don't regret a thing. Some things are still a struggle, like not drinking with my meals, but the struggles become less noticeable & just a way of life after a while.

Oh my gosh I have so much to say about this! You're going to feel that way and it's not going to go away necessarily anytime soon. There are so many factors at play right now. You're going to mourn the loss of your old life comma the food used to eat, the drinks you used to drink, even the way you interacted socially with others. You're also dealing with massive hormone dumps for the fat loss. This is also very normal and I promise you it will get better over time! I am almost a year out I had surgery April 29th of last year. The first few weeks actually did not bother me it was after that after the puree stage and the soft foods and and all of that comma that I really started to have issues with morning my old life. Once I finally started going out to social events or going out to dinner with my family or my husband, that's when it really started to bother me. The best thing I can tell you to try to counteract that is go look in a mirror. You are not going to see it a lot yet but in two or three months you're going to see such huge changes in yourself that it lessens the blow. Even to this day, almost a year out from surgery I still get low comma I still get depressed and I wish I could eat that bowl of spaghetti or drink that glass of red wine but when I get upset and I get frustrated I look in the mirror or I go and I take a picture and I use an app to put a picture of Me 3 days before surgery next to what I look like at this exact moment and the difference is shocking. And it's shocking enough that I suddenly don't really miss it all that much anymore. The biggest thing for me is how much pain I was in prior to surgery. I have several autoimmune diseases and I live the last three years of my life on immunosuppressive drugs, Tramadol, Tizanidine, various other medications related to pain relief and management of my diseases. When I could get up and attempt to function in my life it was through the use of insane amounts of coffee period and that was only to be able to get me out of bed to be able to get me to work so that I didn't lose my job. I had literally nothing left at the end of the day for my husband or for my beautiful little boy. So whenever you get down and whenever this just starts to feel like it's too much remember what it used to be like remember how far you've already come and how much further you're going to go. Remember that this is totally worth it in the end. oh my gosh I have so much to say about this! You're going to feel that way and its not going to go away necessarily anytime soon. Just a quick question for anyone who's past the inflammation stage. At the minute I'm really thirsty and struggling to drink as I don't want to put too much pressure in my new pouch. I have a 500ml bottle of Water and I'm going to try and finish it within the next 3-5 hours or so. Is this ok? How long does Water take to get past the stomach.

also anyone who's past the inflammation stage. How much can you drink in one go? Like can you finish a cup of coffee? Can you have half a cup of water in one sitting? Can you gulp down 200ml water half hour and gulp another 200ml

any idea would greatly help me as I'm concerned about being thirsty forever this is horrible haha !

The inflammation should taper off soon. When the stomach is empty water pretty much passes straight through. The only times to be cautious is trying to drink too soon after eating (once you reach that stage). My doc always told me to wait at least 30 minutes to drink after eating.

As to volume I'm getting fluids down fairly easy now. Mind the conversion between English/metric, but I try to carry around a 32 oz bottle which is close to 950ml. I can drink that entire thing within a few hours of waking up. Truthfully I could get it down sooner but sometimes that much water into your gut too quickly makes you feel water logged...lol. You do want to try and get into a habit of taking decent sized swallows, but you don't want to do big gulps. It's more of a mental thing to remind yourself to slow down. It's going to take patience to eat once you're there. Slow & steady wins the race ;)

No matter how you view what you have been through it will all pass and it will be best decision you ever made! I'm almost 4 months post op and it is indeed a full lifestyle change, BUT worth every thing I went through. The first several weeks were the hardest because of the drastic change. Stay the course and realize you are merely giving up a month or two of your life to live the rest of your life like a brand new person. I have lost 127 pounds and have a new outlook on life. It is hard to believe because you THOUGHT you were just happy when big but wait until you level our and the weight starts falling off. IT IS AMAZING! This is by no means the easy way out but very hard for about a month. Keep it up you are doing great!!!!

My first 20 days were miserable. Each week after that it gets better and better. I'm at 10 weeks now and feeling normal. Hang in there, it really does suck at first so what you're experiencing is normal. You can do though.

Hi James, my prayers go out to you. I was sleeved on 2-20 and last Friday, sat, and most of Sunday were horrible for me. I posted a similar post on this site myself and these great people were very quick to respond with well wishes. It DOES get better. For me it was yesterday. I, too was feeling remorseful and panic stricken. I wanted to take it all back. It just seemed like I'd done something terrible to myself. I gave myself some time, and I see things much better now and I'm ready to tackle my new me.
Good luck to you.

I just got out of hospital yesterday. I spent an extra day there because I had an adverse reaction to the Love box (heparin)..I started throwing up bright red blood and had it coming out both ends. I was so scared. I thought....what have I done. I'm home now and feel pretty good. Just sore where incisions are. Did anyone else have a reaction like this to blood thinner?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
