Need help choosing procedure

Recommended Posts

Last week I had my consultation. When the surgeon walked in he told me he was surprised I was leaning towards RNY instead of VSG. He discussed both and said he would do either one, but it was up to me to choose. He didn't want to tell me what I should do, but he also said if he had just read my chart (5'6, 260, no major health issues) he would have said VSG was good option. I'm worried I won't lose enough of my weight if I get VSG. I'm worried that VSG won't be drastic enough to help me make changes. Worried that I'll have complications because RNY has more risks than VSG. During my 2nd C-section my OBGYN mentioned removing excess scar tissue from my 1st C-section, so now I'm worried that I'll develop adhesions from RNY that will cause complications. Help! Why did you choose your procedure and what has your recovery been like? I'm still leaning towards RNY, but absolutely scared!!

I too had c-sections and had adhesions removed two times. I'm almost 4 weeks post op on my gastric by pass surgery. I choose gastric because from people I've seen as a person and a RN gastric patients tend to loose more and have a better success rate of keeping it off. I have well over 100 pounds to lose and for me gastric by pass stood a better chance at getting me close to my goal weight. Also, my sister had it done 5 years ago and she looks amazing. You have to do what you feel is best for you. Many are very successful with the sleeve. I just know I need a stricter lifestyle in order to maintain weight loss and I feel the by pass gives me that. The first week or two of recovery was tough. I had a lot of head hunger and dumping once. But now...I feel amazing! My back pain is almost completely gone and I'm still on the puréed portion of recovery. Do your research...ask questions of your surgeon. You'll find your answers. I wish you all the best! I have similar stats to you 5'7 267 starting weight i choose the gastric bypass for a few reasons 3 people in my family have had it and are long term and doing GREAT ! I also worked at a bariatric surgeons office and saw most success from gbp pts ( the sleeve was commen then though ) and also i like the fact the gbp has more restrictions i feel it will make me more accountable...with that being said everyone is differnt and has their reasons best of luck to you and your decision it will be the right one

It is a very personal decision, so your doc is right, it is up to you (my doc was same way, put me in the driver's seat on making the decision, said she'd be happy to go with whichever I felt would be best for me). When I started out the whole thing, I was all about vsg, totally thought I'd choose that. However, after my first one-on-one meeting with my NUT, I was thinking perhaps gb was the best decision for me, reasons: I wanted the max benefit if I was going to have a wls; i already had gerd, didn't want to risk it getting worse with vsg; after years and years of losing weight and regain, i felt the gb would give me the strictest tool to lose and maintain the weight loss. It just all of a sudden clicked for me that gb was right for me, so that's what I did.

Now 8 months out and absolutely NO regrets about my decision. My restrictive tool works as intended, it's allowed me to rework my relationship with food (it no longer rules my life and every waking thought), and I feel amazing. Except for the "reminders" my pouch sometimes gives me....sometimes I'd almost forget I had a surgery.

And I feel very lucky in that when I had my 6 month labs checked, all my vitamin/mineral levels were totally fine (even though I'm not 100% at taking my supplements), Iron was good, etc. Only thing low was my prealbumin, which can be an indicator of malnutrition....but, that's pretty much what the surgery does, prevents intake of a portion of calories and other elements. As long as I continue to feel and look great (I keep hearing tons of comments about how young and healthy I look now), I can live with a little malnutrition, lol.

Best of luck with your decision, surgery, and recovery!

FYI, If you're curious how my weight loss has been, I started out with a goal to lose about 110 lbs (I'm 5'2", HW was 236 (Feb 2016), SW was 221(June 2016). CW 157, for loss of 79 lbs from 1 year ago, and 64 lbs in 8 months since surgery. I started out dropping quickly, then after about 2 months, it tapered to about 6-8 lbs a month. Not super fast, but I'm ok with that, and still losing. I want to get to 125, but would be cool with 135 (with excess skin, I can deal with 10 lbs over goal).

@sne0104....sorry for yet another post....forgot to mention I had also had several surgeries prior to my rny (gallbladder and appendix out, and c-section delivering twins), and honestly, the adhesion pain I suffered with from my c-section almost 16 years ago....has been totally gone since my rny. Forgot to ask if my surgeon actually did some ligation of them, or if they just "relaxed" from the gas stretching my abdomen. Will see if they come back, but for now am thrilled to no longer have that pelvic pain from them.

I had RNY gastric bypass over 3 1/2 years ago. I choose RNY because I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery. Sleeve will only make this condition worse.

I had rny due to having gerd as patient above. I wanted the sleeve as well. My surgeon said the sleeve would make it worse. Surgery 1-10-17. Down 36 pounds. For me nausea and headaches plagued me. More recently much better. I am also sixty years old. The surgeon repaired my hiatal hernia along with rny. Previous abdominal surgeries were open cholecystectomy, (gall bladder), appendectomy, and c-section. Just this week, which is week six, I had two wounds that were red and festering. The inside stitches were being rejected by my body. Nothing bad, the surgeon removed the stitches in his office. Today I feel pretty good. Good luck to you. Do your research hon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
