Packertrav 3 Posted February 26, 2017 Looking for some reassurances here. Lol Fought weight issues all adult life. Friend and I have talked about WLS for years. Thursday Feb. 23rd we went to a doctor who does WLS. I did like what the doctor had to say and decided to go ahead with the gastric bypass surgery. Insurance has an exclusion for morbid obesity surgeries so I am a self pay client. Due to work schedule I called on Friday Feb. 24th and asked if I could have surgery by March 3rd. I went that afternoon and had my mental exam and a stress test. Surgery is a go for Friday March 3rd. I have started my liquid preop diet and getting prepared mentally. Couple questions I have, has anyone else had surgery 8 days after deciding to have it, and how long will it be before I will safely ride my motorcycle after surgery? marieac2 85 Posted February 26, 2017 (edited) No! I did classes at mayo for over 2 1/2 months before surgery. Sessions with psych & nutrition. I believe the classes are essential, there is so much to learn. Plus it's a requirement by Mayo bariactric & general surgery. Personally I have never heard of anyone seeing the Dr & scheduling surgery 10 days later. Here's a great web site by Tufts Medical Center. It tells you the diet you need to follow from surgery day to 6 months. https://www.tuftsmedicalcenter.org/~/media/Brochures/TuftsMC/Patient Care Services/Departments and Services/Weight and Wellness Center/GBP Diet Manual12611.ashx Best of luck to you! Packertrav 3 Posted February 26, 2017 Thanks for the link. I will look at it. The doctor I choose was referred by two friends, so I am trusting their recommendations. Supposedly great post op support. Glad to have found this page though
Mickie0130 61 Posted February 26, 2017 I too was a self pay. Only had to do a few things before my surgery. EGD, lab work, meet with nut, and psych eval. I would have had my surgery within two weeks but my job (RN) required me to work through my current schedule. So I had mine about 30 days after initial appointment with my surgeon. As far as driving, my surgeon said not to until I wasn't taking any pain meds. That's a good question to ask your surgeons office. Wishing you the best of luck! Packertrav 3 Posted March 3, 2017 The night before the by pass. Feeling good and very ready to start anew. Surgery at 0800 Friday morning, 1.5 hours left to drink Water. The liquid diet diet was much easier after day two. First two days were pretty rough for a fat guy. At my PreOp appointment I had many more questions then the initial visit. No catheter was welcomed news. I will try to post tomorrow evening about post op feeling. 1 amyjane79 reacted to this
Sleeve1stFitNext 924 Posted March 3, 2017 It took me 6 months with my insurance and Surgeon. Even if the insurance approved it right away, my Surgeon prefers the 6 months. He says it allows people to make the changes gradually and be sure about their decision. Most self paid client do not have to wait nor follow the requirements though. Good luck tomorrow!!!
