Considering a revision - read this!

Recommended Posts

I have tried to keep upbeat during my journey even though it has been through it all. Band 2009 revised to sleeve 2014 and revising to bypass in April. One thing that I do know, is if I hadn't been through this journey, I would still be diabetic. I take the good with the bad and being diabetic for me was the really really bad. My family has had both my maternal great grandmother and grandmother losing legs to diabetes, my mother is diabetic and when I was diagnosed in my 30s I wasn't having any of that. Yes I have had so many complications, but I also have my life and I am thankful for that. I am concerned that someone on this page is so adamant on not getting revised that they are trying to scare people into making decisions that are only their own to make, not their families, not truly their spouses, this decision is truly only between that person and their doctor. My spouse is supportive, my mother is not. I don't really care. I have not been diabetic since 2009 and that was my main goal!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I am not the least bit bitter about my revisions.@AnneElliot you need to get a life and stop berating people based on your opinion. This is a place for support, not extra drama.

You clearly don't understand that honesty is required when providing support!

No worries at 3 months post op. The way I am headed with my acid reflux I will probably also be triple threat with yet another revision!

There is honesty with positive support and then there is bullying. Being supportive and honest does not require negative attitudes. I'm sorry your surgery didn't go well, but don't push your opinions and negative feedback on people who need to hear about the good their surgery can do for them. There is always pros and cons to getting WLS. You don't need to try sabotaging others hopes. We all know the risks surgery has and we sign consent to have it done. Complications suck, but we deal with them as they come. Statisticly, more WLS goes off without a hitch than having complications happen.
I hope you have a successful revision this time around.

It's so
It's so much easier to manage those things than the damn complications associated with this surgery.
But good luck

How can you speak about the reality of somebody elses situation being "so much easier to manage those things" rather than the complications the surgery "might" cause? Clearly you have had issues with your own revision based on your numerous negative comments all over this forum - and I am truly sorry that this is the case for you. But surely you realise that the complications you are experiencing are felt by a small minority of patients and is not the norm? Everybody I know, and from all feedback Ive read regarding patients who have had revision - they wish that they did it years ago rather than putting up with food blockages etc with the band.

Not everyone has "damn complications." I'm doing very well after gastric bypass, and I say that even though I developed an internal hernia nine months later. This is a SERIOUS complication but I caught it on time, had outpatient surgery and am doing great. I am grateful I was able to have surgery and I don't regret it one bit.

I am so sorry for your complications.

I had to do a 5 week long 9 total hours support group with 1st year sleeves who are not losing weight as they should.

So I have been meeting with a room full of people who have had the sleeve within the last year.

Included in that group are people who need to be resleeved as well.

It's an amazing opportunity to be around people who have the sleeve and have every reason to complain.
NONE OF THEM HAVE REGRETTED THE DECISION.

It's not to say that some people don't regret it. It's not to say that some people don't have complications. But your feelings are YOUR feelings. They are valid and real. This is the place to share your frustrations and your story. It's just not the place to share them THE WAY you are sharing them.

Your message is being communicated in a way that turns people off. That's just not a way to communicate effectively. It never works.

As to your specific issues: There are many tools to help with acid reflux. If those aren't working, find your next option... share your journey in a constructive way.

And Since you like honesty so much, I will be honest with YOU. You might have heartburn from your negative attitude. Stress kills. And being negative is stressful. That along with eating too much and the wrong thing too son leads to reflux and getting stuck... according to my 5 week long class.

If you are 3 months out, according to "the rules" you should not even be eating the foods you are complaining about not being able to eat. We learned that straying from the first year diet plan as you have IS THE CAUSE of numerous complications such as the ones you have listed.

It might be better to focus on what you have done and are potentially doing to help or hurt your situation.

Wow, that's an over-generalizing thing to say...

I understand that surgical complications can be serious but so can side effects of diabetes etc. - and no, it's not always "easier to control these issues".

Somebody said she's since been banned. She was doing nothing but going around posting horror/scare stories and trying to talk people out of WLS. Better to let these threads die and get buried in the forum. Would rather see them all deleted.

IMO that's jumping to conclusions. Yes, it might be the case but sleeve is known for causing severe GERD in a lot of people.

Banned? Ok... it doesn't show her as banned and this thread is about 4 weeks old only.

I didn't think so either because it doesn't say it, so I don't know for sure. Just what I was told. There was a post that did get removed because it was just garbage and got reported by some people. Complications suck, and WLS is not an easy decision to make, but some people take a really shyte approach to "helping" others.

I think of it like a cousin of mine. She had c-sections even though she wanted home birth, her two other kids were delivered c-section as well even though she tried to go the route of VBAC. Years later she joins Facebook, finds these VBAC groups, and turns into nothing but incessant whining about how she's been betrayed and starts suggesting women avoid c-sections at all costs. One of the reasons I deleted Facebook years ago.

Unfortunately some people are so upset (or feel so betrayed) by things they can't be reasoned with. From reading a few of her posts (and won't bother reading any more) it doesn't seem like she understood enough what the surgery would do, had unrealistic expectations, and those people are by default those who are most prone to not only disappointment but these sort of exaggerated reactions.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
