Bad side effects

Recommended Posts

I have heard that with the DS you can have uncontrolled diarrhea and foul smelling gas, what is the truth.

If so how bad is it

I do not think this is limited to just DS. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery. Right after surgery I became lactose intolerant and consuming anything that had lactose such as milk immediately gave me an upset stomach and a quick trip to the restroom with diarrhea. This condition lasted for around 2 months and then went away.

After surgery you will generate odors (poo, gas, mouth). This can occur because your body is thrown into ketosis. As you transition from the weight loss phase to the maintenance phase, this problem should be significantly reduced.

Honestly it isn't bad unless you eat something that you aren't supposed to. So any carbs = stinky poo.

I take Devrom and use poo pouri and it's not so bad.

I had the same concerns, but many of the people I talked to that have had their surgery agree that it is controlled by eating correctly and it does get better over time.

The first two weeks my bm's smelled pretty bad, but I didn't and still don't have diarrhea and I'm on soft moist foods. I agree, Poopouri is definitely a must buy though

I get terrible diarrhea if I eat anything super high in fat. Carbs don't bother me on that front, but still make me nauseous if I eat too much. That being said, it's almost never immediate. Your tummy will give you warnings about when it feels bad, and you'll know to avoid that food in the future. Granted, if I had eaten on plan, I wouldn't have that issue haha.

The poo and gas smell comes from the amount of Protein in your diet. It goes away as you start incorporating carbs (veggies etc) into your diet.

I could be wrong because this was a long time ago that I remember reading this, but I believe the more sugar you consume, the stinkier the "outcome". Your normal bacteria in your gut (the guys that keep you healtht) get as excited about sugar as a kid at a birthday party, and the sugar puts them into high gear producing....gas....stinky gas and poop. Take away their sugar, and they start behaving again. Also, if you get constipated, your waste just sits, getting more Water pulled out of it and it sort of ferments...so again....stinkville. Try to remain regular too if you can.

Yes, be confident. You will be just fine.

I've reached my goal weight recently, and let me tell you... you won't give a damn about the gas because being healthy is much better than bad gas. :D

Just stay on plan - AND EXERCISE.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
