Screwed up on pre-op diet ?

Recommended Posts

5 days until surgery and I slipped up a few times. Need to get back on track FAST. How do I do this? My doctor said my liver lookes normal (not fatty) but had to go on the 2 week liquid diet anyway due to my BMI (53). I'm so worried ?.

Best thing to do is capitalize on that fear. Stick to the liquids that your doc told you to do and don't deviate. You just have to look at it as the better you do in the next couple of days the better your surgery will go. Sticking to what you're supposed to do on the other side of a surgery is a must. Cheating now has some amount of forgiveness if you haven't completely gone off the rails, but after surgery you can do serious damage if you don't follow instructions.

Stay positive but make a promise that there is no more cheating from here on out.

Just get back on track the reason why you're on the liquids is to help you they say if your liver is fatty or has any issues it's like Jell-O and they have to move your liver slightly in order to do the procedure and if your liver comes apart during the procedure they can't fix it. They told us this stuff in our class that I'm taking. So it's only helping you in the long run you don't want to have a longer recovery

I live in temporary housing so getting rid of tempting foods isn't an option. I just stay out of the kitchen as much as possible, only to fix my food and leave right away. After surgery I won't be eating nearly as much as I used to (which will be a big plus).

You can do it! Don't think about the slip up again. Press forward. I was kind of forced to participate in a thanksgiving meal in the middle of my Pre-op. I didn't think twice about it. Made up for the 'slip up' by three extra days of cardio.
The goal of the diet is to mobilize the liver to use up stored fat around it, so you should be alright.

Brace up for the immediate Post-op period though. The cravings/temptations may come back hard, so you'll need all the mental strength you can garner.

All the best

Mistakes happen. Chalk it up as a lesson learned (and we really can't cheat post-op!) and move forward!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
