How do I figure out my goal weight?

Recommended Posts

I had the gastric sleeve surgery Jan 24th, 2017. Everywhere I go and everyone I talk to asks what my goal weight is. I have no clue, I was never walked through this part. I've read I can lose 60% of excess weight and I've read I'll lose up to 80% of excess weight. I had lost 19 pounds at my 2-week post-op visit, and I weighted myself at a friend's house this weekend (4 weeks post-op) and it said I had lost another 21 pounds. My weight at surgery was 285. That would make me 245, I used some calculator I found online and used the 60% figure, and that said I'd get my weight down to 200. Now I haven't changed my weight in my proflie because it was such a surprise that my weight had dropped that drasticly I just want to weigh myself on another scale to be sure. Although my family says I look like I've lost that much. It just sounds crazy tome that at my 4 week mark I've lost half the weight I'm going to lose. Does anyone know what the correct percentage is of expected weightloss? And how exactly do I figure out my goal weight?

I am almost 2 years out & I still dont have a goal weight. It was never about that # for me though .. it was about my glucose & diabetes. THAT goal was to be in the normal range. Happy to say I have maintained that. :) As for weight... I have lost 70% of my excess body weight. I still drop a pound here & there but nothing drastic. When people ask what my goal is I am honest & tell them I dont have one.

The general rule is that you lose 60 -70% of your EXCESS weight due to Weight Loss Surgery (bypass or sleeve). Meaning that if you weigh 300 pounds and you should weight 150 pounds, you will lose 60-70% of the difference (150 *.70 = 100 pounds). Most surgeons and NUTs use that to base goal weight on. Does that mean you can't lose more - NO! But I understand from reading other's experiences, it takes more effort to get to a lower weight.

My NUT's goal for me is 190 - 200 pounds. I will be very happy if I make that goal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
