Big Medicine

Recommended Posts

Do any of you watch Big Medicine on Discovery Health? I have watched a few episode. Now I am wondering if I shouldn't have gotten the bipass surgery. I have been banded for almost a year...only lost 40 pounds. I need to lose so much more than that....I am an impatient person too.

Some surgeries work for some people, and some they don't.

I think it's a personal decision.

I wanted to start with lap-band. I'm determined to make it work, but my mind said.. if lap-band fails, I can easily go to RNY.

If RNY fails, it would be harder to go to lap-band.

That was my logic on the matter.

I'm still terrified of RNY, so I really am wanting the band to work for me!

I LOVE THE SHOW Big Medicine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garth also does LapBands, they have shown a few and I think the plan is for more banded patients to be featured in season 2.

I watch it when I can, but I missed what happened to Tiffany?? Did she ever get her surgery? Last night I fell asleep when they were talking about the 650 lb bed ridden man who had RNY last week, how is he doing?

It's true that it may take longer for you to reach goal. Just remember that you are more likely to stay at goal than someone who had RNY. There are a lot of people who had RNY that have to turn around and get a revision to another type of WLS when they regain weight down the road.

I watched the 1st episode the week before I had my lapband surgery. I was very uncertain if the band was the right way for me to go. I weighed in at 290 at my pre-op visit so I had a significant amount of weight to lose. I had my surgery 108 days ago and I've lost 46 lbs. I have a 10 cm band and it holds 4cc's of Fluid. I had my 3rd fill one week ago and I'm at a 2.5cc's. I can only eat about 1/4 - 1/2 of food at a meal. Since last thursday I have lost 7 lbs. I feel really good and this is the best I've felt after a fill. I hope I'm in my sweet spot.

I wanted to give you some background on myself- to show you that every experience is different. I'm curious as to why you don't know if you got a fill or not. Trust me, I'm so into losing weight that I ask for a fill every time I go in (once a month) I know exactly how much they remove and how much they put in. Perhaps you need to be *more* proactive with you fill/weightloss. I thought the weight was going to just drop off but I've learned that of course it is NOT that easy! I have to every day focus on what I'm eating, how much I'm eating, how much exercise etc.

If I were you I'd be knocking on my dr's door and making that band work for me!

LOVE the show! I was actually banded by Dr. Robert and Dr. Garth a week ago, and really they don't push the RNY on you unless they really feel you need it. The show seems to be all gung-ho on the RNY, but in reality they are very supportive of both surgeries, it just depends on your individual situation. Personally, Dr. Robert told me he wouldn't have done a RNY on me even if I had wanted it, but I think that had a lot to do with my age, starting weight, mentality, etc.

I agree with lauraj23...it'd be so much harder for them to revise the RNY to a lap band, which I think is a major pro for the lap band. Not to mention, the lap band will always be there for you even if you've been slacking for a bit with exercise, not eating exactly the way you should, and so on...whereas with GB your stomach can end up stretching back out again and you're kind of screwed at that point.

Isn't that show on TLC also?? Because I have seen almost all of the episodes. And it was nice to see the fill of a lapband the night before mine so I knew what to expect. When does the new season start?

My Mom called me when this first came on and told me to watch. I've been addicted ever since. I think shows like this are good to educate people and de-mystique everything. There are still a LOT of people out there who don't know what a lapband or bypass is, and what they can do.

I didn't know they were showing this on Discovery Health. I started watching about 1/2 way through the season when it was originally airing on TLC.

Thanks for the heads up - I'd like to try and catch the episodes I missed.

I love that show too. I watch it for inspiration. Even though RNY has never been an option for me (too chicken). I know its going to take me a bit longer to get it off then the bypass people but I know if they can do it...darn it so can I!! I also like that fact that the docs seem so sincere and concerned about all aspects of their patients...physically and mentally. The 20 years that I've been battling my weight I've seen way too many doctors that have told me that its all in my head and if I wanted to lose weight all I had to do was stop eating. Thank goodness I have now found docs like Drs. Davis (Robert and Garth) that are compassionate and are helping get rid of this weight!!

Never heard of Big Medicine, but you all have me intrigued, going to have to TiVo it. Is it like, only weight loss surgeries, reality?

I love that show! It has given me the extra boost I needed to look into LB for myself. I also like that they are honest about who must lose weight before the surgery and they really explain the choices they make. Can't wait for the next season to start.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
