Do you miss being able to eat certain foods?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm scheduled for my gastric bypass next Monday, Feb. 27th and I have so many questions for someone who has gone through the surgery!

Do you miss certain foods? Are you upset that you made such an extreme decision that leaves you unable to have certain things?

I've changed my lifestyle and want to change it for good but I do indeed love certain foods and I'm afraid I'll be upset when I begin to deny myself certain things, or upset when I just physical can't have them anymore. Is this silly or is this a real concern? Please let me know your experiences. :)

I am scheduled for surgery on March 6. I am finding myself really waxing and waning emotionally. I am worried about the same thing. I am not hungry on my Protein shake fast, but I find myself wanting to eat. I am worried I have some huge food addiction issues that I am not addressing because this makes no logical sense! Gah! I was in a convenience store to use the bathroom earlier and a girl spun around and stuck a piece of shitty pizza in my face and I wanted to throat-punch her. Also, in my pre-op class today, some idiot who was there to "support" a friend, brought KFC. I feel weak and like a complete loser.

I had rny in December. After reading a lot and talking with people, I've realized that everyone's experience is unique.
At this point, I can eat almost anything. If I'm craving something, I just eat really small amounts. Of course I'm cautious about calories. I always keep my intake of sugars, carbs and fats low. If it's a "new" food. I literally try 1 small bite. Sometimes a taste is all I really need to not feel deprived

Thanks, Hikerdog! I appreciate your input. I think I am going to make a list of all the reasons I need to have the surgery. It seems like this is more of a psychological thing for me than anything else. It truly defies logic. Thank you!

I don't miss any foods that I can't eat. And when I say I "can't" eat them, it's much more of I don't want to eat them. RNY has completely changed my interest in certain foods. I have zero desire to eat anything sweet: Cookies, ice cream, candy, cake, brownies, etc. I also am very careful about high fat foods since they make me feel terrible.

I am so happy that I finally had RNY. It has saved my life.

I also can eat pretty much anything in small amounts, so sometimes I indulge, but I track my calories and watch macros too. I haven't been perfect at any of this over the last 21 months since surgery but I'm getting back on track. Pre surgery I didn't think about missing certain foods because I was tired of those foods ruling my life. I was ready to get rid of them. Then nothing made me dump and I was disappointed because I "could" still eat junk. Now it's on me to avoid them. Frankly, I don't really want them and wonder why I eat them, even in small amounts, when I do.

I don't miss any food. My relationship with food has changed. I'm no longer an emotional eater. Instead I'm a mindful eater. I eat clean and work out. I don't measure my success with number on the scale but with my fitness level and inches lost.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
