How soon after gastric bypass surgery can I lie down flat in bed to sleep?

How soon after gastric bypass surgery can I lie down flat in bed to sleep? My back/coccyx hurts when I sit up to sleep. My surgery was 5 days ago.

Thanks

I was able to lay flatter on my back (with a pillow fort all around me!) after about a week. I'm a side/stomach sleeper and am just starting to do that comfortably at about 4 weeks out. I discovered that if I stopped drinking fluids about 30 minutes before bed it helped me be more comfortable on my back. And if I drank during the night I would sit up for 10-15 minutes before trying to lay back down.

This is the one part of the program I didn't follow to the letter. My Dr. said to sleep upright a month, but I just couldn't. I wasn't sleeping at all. I went back to bed night 4.

Thanks for replying guys. I thought I wasn't sleeping because I was sitting up but I tried lying down flat last night and couldn't do it - I was just to uncomfortable. I'm definitely lying more flat that I was, but with loads of pillows around me. Am I right in thinking that this uncomfortable 'jelly-like' feeling in my belly will get better in time? I'm used to sleeping on my side but there is absolutely no way I can manage that at the moment.

The jelly feeling will go away for sure. Early on whenever I would lay back or especially on my side I swear it felt like all of my insides would shift and tumble around. That went away around maybe 2-3 weeks?

I lay on my side with a pillow under my belly to support it, did this at about 2 weeks but I know others have done this earlier. Hope you get some sleep!!!

Yeah I hope I get to sleep better soon too!

Thanks for the replies - it's good to know how other people are getting on.

I was able to sleep flat on my back as soon as I came home from the hospital, on my 3rd day. It's different for everyone

Was a couple weeks for me. I was able to sleep on my side but yeah, it felt like everything was sloshing around in there. I tried using a folded towel for a little extra tummy support but it wasn't super helpful. I'm glad that sloshy feeling finally went away!

I was in a recliner for three weeks. Hurt to lay down in bed and I wouldn't be able to pull myself up to sit

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
