Worried and confused

I had the gastric sleeve surgery a week ago and aside from a little discomfort, I feel great. I thought my stomach wasn't suppose to tolerate anything other than liquids, but I've been able to eat apple sauce, Greek yogurt and a very thick egg and Tomato sauce puree. Is that normal? I don't feel sick after eating. I don't feel pressure. And while I shouldn't be complaining, I have this underlying worry some feeling. Is it normal? Everyone I spoke to was sick and nauseous and had no appetite for at least 2 weeks post surgery. But I am non of those things. Why am I not feeling any different??

I was able to tolerate that type of stuff one week post-op. I didn't really have nausea after surgery, you will feel more restriction as you move to more solid foods. You will feel more pressure as your nerves heal, be careful about over doing it because it can be easy to test things when you aren't feeling as much and that can be dangerous. I didn't feel a lot of pressure at first but I definitely knew when I was full and needed to stop, I can't even describe the feeling I got with it. Now at 7 weeks post-op I definitely feel full and discomfort if I have even a bite too much.

I was very similar. I started with plain yogurt on day 5. I have eaten many different things with no problem. Wait until you try cottage cheese or refried Beans. You will find out exactly how much your tummy can hold, it is uncomfortable to eat even 1 bite more.

I moved to pureed foods at 1 week and I have the same concern. I had a whole cup of Soup last night and no pressure, no restriction. Granted, it was a completely liquefied Vitamix recipe, but still. I need restriction. I can lose weight. I can't keep it off. I need this restriction to be there when my willpower fails me. Worried.

Don't worry...you're gonna feel full as all get out soon enough. I've been on the pureed stage for almost 2 weeks. Things like yogurts, Protein shakes, and other thin items go down without much fuss. Some heavier things I tried like eggs, the ricotta bake, sweet potato, etc. sat really heavy. I would still be careful on portions because things still aren't wired up right at this point. I try to keep everything to 1/2 cup or less per "meal" to be on the safe side.

Don't forget your stomach is numb for the first weeks. Like Orion says... measure, measure, measure!

^^^^ this. I could eat things with no issue at 2 weeks, that I cannot at 8 weeks.

I am now just short of 1 month post surgery and like you I didn't experience the nausea or rejections of food. Was even was able to drink pretty easily. It worried me but the weight is coming off and I am easily full with several small meals throughout the day, so as long as I am getting the right amounts of Water and Protein I am just writing my experience off to everyone is different. I think the key to continued success will be personal disapline.

I'm 2 1/2 weeks out and like you, at one week I was practically convinced something was wrong. Did I go through this for no restriction? Why was everyone else so sick? I could drink and take pureed foods with no issues. THEN....at exactly 2 weeks, I must have regained feeling in my stomach. 3 oz of Soup and 15 mins later I seriously thought my stomach might explode. I had eaten the same soup in the same quantity for a week! How could this be? Ever since, my portions have been less because i can feel the pain now. So my advice would be to take it SLOW and eat LESS than you can until your feeling returns.

I was/am the same way! I had no pain or nausea in the hospital. When I was finally allowed to drink Water I could drink as much as I wanted (though I tried not to). I've been on purees this week, which includes soft foods like canned tuna or eggs. Anything liquid (like a Protein shake) goes down with no problem, but I do admit that I am getting full with the foods. I started real foods a little early (yesterday) with some chicken breast and spinach, and while I didn't feel any restriction, I kept the portions right (3 oz. of chicken, 1 oz. of veggies). And that satisfied me completely. So far I've no problems with nausea, food aversions, painful restrictions, getting my liquids in, or Constipation. If I didn't have the scars on my stomach I would seriously question whether or not I had the surgery at all!

In fact, when I was day 3 post-op I had a total meltdown in the hospital when talking to one of the doctors. I felt that my surgeon hadn't cut enough of my stomach away! Seriously - everyone on my floor had some problem(s) and I had none. I felt great, I was moving around a lot...it just didn't seem right. So she showed me a picture of my excised stomach (it's pretty long) and told me not to worry about it, that I should be happy that I am one of the few that feels great after surgery.

So I'm trying to remember that regardless of how I feel, I should follow the plan and the portions to help me stay on target.

People respond differently. I saw a guy get released from surgery, walk over to the buffet at the hotel, and eat bacon & eggs. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. He ended up in severe distress.

Your stomach has to have time to heal. Eating foods too soon could cause complications...food particles getting stuck around the staples, infection, or even a leak or rupture.

Please follow your doctor's guidelines.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
