Any sleevers doing a ketogenic diet?

Recommended Posts

I have been in Ketosis for several weeks by keeping my net carbs under 30 grams a day. Seems to work well by eliminating hunger from my day to day life.

Just curious how many others are doing Keto as well?

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I've been doing Keto for 2 months. I have dropped 25 lbs so far and I feel great. I definitely plan to keep doing it after vsg. Check out the Fitmissbliss blog, she's a VSGer who does keto now too.

I will check it out for sure! Thank you for sharing, best of luck with your surgery. If you can do keto before your surgery, you are going to nail this.

Basically a low carb diet. Your focus is on keeping your Protein intake up but your carbs extremely low.

Google can give a better answer, but your brain and body have two primary ways of processing food to energy. One is taking carbs and converting them to energy (you brain prefers this method as it is the easiest to take a carb and convert to energy) or having your body convert your fat into usable brain energy by your liver converting fat into ketones.

Thus, your body runs off of your fat reserves instead of your food intake. But your body will only do this when carbs are not a viable option. So people who eat enough carbs to sustain their brain energy won't use their fat as a fuel resource.

In lamens terms, you are changing your engine to run off of cooking oil instead of gasoline. By eating a higher fat diet, but low carb and moderate Protein. (Fats have to come from quality sources like coconut oil and avocado, not deep fried chicken and gravy)

Atkins is basically a Keto diet before they knew the science behind it.

Here is a site that provides a lot of info from it- www.dietdoctor.com

I'm doing it as part of my six-month supervised diet. It works well for me however whenever I go off, no matter much I lost I always rocket back to my starting weight. I'm hoping that post surgery things will be better

I'll ask my nutritionist on the 1st to see what they think about it post op.

I'm following this also, it's not too bad so far. I was a little run down (probably from the surgery itself, but is seems OK. There's also a ton of recipies online also.

Actually, the focus is low carb and high fat. There should be a moderate intake of Protein.

I was the doing Keto before surgery. I'm now on liquid diet and obviously can't eat food but I did like the Keto diet before and would like to continue doing once I'm in regular food. Good luck to you all. No matter what, remember that making the decision of having surgery was the best decision ever!

Hi BigUtahMan,

The keyto diet is something I was really messing around with a couple of months ago. I agree, it helped me with hunger as well. I bought books, keytone sticks, read articles and watched youtube videos to gain a better understanding. I asked my nut about it and she just said not to worry about whether or not I was in ketosis, just to continue eating Protein first and focus on whole foods...all the things she had taught me over the past year plus. I was also reading conflicting information, which is pretty much the case with anything you look up on the internet these days. It was a little strict for me. It was hard for me to process that if I ate one apple (20g of carbs) that I was probably over my carb limit. My nut is a fan of the paleo diet and it seems to be less restrictive, so I'm currently learning more about paleo. I think Keto can be very beneficial, but very stict. At 14 months out I find myself still learning.

Same, Keto has it merits to brake the carb cravings, but diminished returns after that.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
