WASaBubbleButt 41 Posted October 1, 2007 I hear a lot of people say they have hair loss during Atkins but that it does grow back. I quit losing weight for one month (plastic surgeon requirement) and it did start growing back yet it was also falling out. Now I have hairs all over my head about 1" long. It's tricky to do anything with it at this point.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted October 2, 2007 Mine is still falling out and shows no signs of stopping. However, my friend had open heart surgery in May, so I took note of when 4 months later would be. I asked her last night if her hair is falling out and it is! So I say it's anesthesia. I have been having more trouble getting my Protein in since my last fill. I am just so darn full all the time. I hope it's not from lack of Protein or I am in trouble.
Suzzzie. 3 Posted October 2, 2007 OK - I just posted about this tonight on the June 2007 thread! MY hair IS FALLING OUT! And its dry and blah looking. I used to have beautiful thick hair. (OK, its still thick...) As someone else said I'm also clogging the shower daily, and then when I comb out my hair after the shower I lose even more! My bathroom trash is filled with my hair. Some days its a handfull, other days its very little. I hate it! I've been taking 2-3 childrens chewable vitamins a day, but just today switched to a liquid multi Vitamin that the lady at GNC recommended. We shall see if it helps any!! purplegirl1818 1 Posted October 3, 2007 my doctor told me that if you dont eat enough protien your hair will fall out in clumps, that happened to a friend who had gastric bypass done too. lets just say that was enough to scare me into eating protien
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted October 4, 2007 I was eating tons of Protein right after surgery. My doctor told me that too, so I made sure I had plenty and my hair still fell out. I know people that have 100 grams of Protein per day, and their hair still fell out.

Guest Band4EJ Posted October 5, 2007 I lost 85 pounds several years ago (before the band) and my thick curly hair was reduced to a dry, dull, frizzy, skinny little pony tail. I did a near starvation diet with no fat and went through a relationship break up at the same time. The shower drain would fill up each time as the well as the brush and my hair was all over my car seat and clothes. I researched it back then and found out that surgeries, stress, weight loss, infection and even childbirth can cause this. This time I thought I was taking preventative measures by eating a balanced diet, monitoring my Protein intake, taking GNC Vitamins and "hair vitamins" as recommended by GNC. Well...my hair is falling out exactly like it did before. I'm not thrilled about it BUT not too worried because it truly did grow back last time. It happened so gradually I didn't really realize it was coming back. It came back just as thick as before but with MORE GREY. Eeeks. So for those of us it does happen to....there is a good chance it will grow back and if you are worried about it...see whichever doctor deals with Hair loss (I think it falls under dermatology???) I know people that have 100 grams of Protein per day, and their hair still fell out. That would describe me. I eat on average 80-120 grams per day...still falling out. Suzzzie. 3 Posted October 5, 2007 Faithmd, HOW do you get in so much Protein? !?! Do you eat it all, or do you drink it? Cause I can't do it unless I drink it!
faithmd 14 Posted October 5, 2007 Nope, don't drink ANY shakes. I eat it. I track on fitday.com and I average 1300-2000 calories a day. It would be damned near impossible if I only ate 800 calories a day.
faithmd 14 Posted October 5, 2007 I didn't mean that as a slam if you are a person who eats 800 calories a day, I just mean that I would likely HAVE to do shakes to get it in if that was the calorie guideline I followed. I like the shakes, but they don't fill me up and I find myself not substituting a shake for a meal, I'll have one in ADDITION to a meal. Bad for me, I know. So I don't do shakes. Suzzzie. 3 Posted October 5, 2007 Lol. No prob Faith! I just can't eat that much. I ate just under 500 calories today - and that actually inclues a Protein Shake. I only counted calories yesterday and today (yesterday was about 550). I can only eat about 1/4-1/2 cup food at a time right now. A small Smart Ones frozen entre takes me 3 'sessions' to eat. I don't even eat 'meals' anymore! I just try to eat about 5 times a day... but I can't always even do that. And to think... I NEVER thought that the band would ACTUALLY work for me! haha! beversman 0 Posted October 5, 2007 my hiar fell out majorly in months 5,6 slowed down in 7, 8... this is my 9th month and it is falling out again. I eat well over 100 grams of Protein. I hear that zinc is also important to prevent the hair loss. My Dr. office suggests Botin... a supplement. I met a lap band patient last night who swears by it. Said it stopped her hair loss! BUT I havent tried it. I had plenty to start with though... so it isnt very noticable. Except for all of the shedding EVERYWHERE
