Insurance to Cash

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone....

I have tricare (through the army) and I know they will pay 100% for the surgery but my nurse is worried we won't have approval back by my scheduled surgery date of 2/28.

I am considering paying cash. But roughly what does the sleeve cost out of pocket and would insurance refund me?

I plan on making calls to both the dr and insurance tomorrow but this is driving me crazy. Surgery is supposed to be in 9 days.

Look on the Tricare website to see what their referral turn around time is and then ask your surgeon when they submitted. If it's beyond that time Tricare is out of compliance and must approve the referral by default.

Cash depends on your area. I found 10,500 and 14,254 in Orlando. I ended up with Dr. Illan in Tijuana, MX for 4,400. I do NOT regret Mexico, it was awesome!

Insurance would not likely reimbursement you. They get billed differently when going through insurance.

If you are that close, be willing to delay the surgery if necessary. It is a ton of money that will be better spent buying Protein or new clothes ;)

I also have tricare and decided to do self pay in MX because there was no proof of dieting with my pcp. I would have had to start from scratch and surgery would be a year or two out.

You are so close.. a week or two should be no biggie.

Also another thing to note is if you don't get preauthorization with some insurances they will not reimburse you after so that's something to look into and consider when making your decision

Tricare is notorious for slow auth process. You should definitely wait and postpone if necessary. You are so close, don't pay for it yourself.

Do not pay out of pocket, insurance will never reimburse you unless you are approved BEFORE the procedure

My insurance covered mine 100% but I paid close attention to what it actually cost. Mine was close to $30,000 for everything. I would have never been able to pay out of pocket. That's why some folks go abroad if they are paying cash. Hopefully everything goes through for you. My insurance only took about 3 days.

Try Dr. Dirk Rodriguez in Dallas or Houston TX. Dr. Dirk performed my hiatal hernia repair, that was covered through my insurance, and he only charged me $2000 for the sleeve. The hospital was $1700 and allowed me to do a payment plan. Dr. Dirk is a WONDERFUL Dr. And he truly cares about your health.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
