How long were you off work?

Recommended Posts

Hi all....I just joined this site today and have so many questions. Have been trying to read past responses in hopes I won't have to ask too much. Just curious, how long did you take off work after your sleeve? I do have a desk job but am up and down quite a bit. Just don't want to go back to work too soon and regret it.

I don't work but I am a full time college student and I was told not to return to class for two weeks. I guess, I have been Blessed. I have not had any problems. I was able to walk to the bathroom after I left recovery and put into my own room. I was discharged the next afternoon. My surgery was 2/8 (Wednesday) and I returned to school the following Monday. I have had very little pain. The first week I lost 11.6 pounds. I walk 3 times a day 30 minutes each time. My two week visit is this Thursday and I hope I can start working out after that. I think each person is different and you'll have to judge for yourself. Good luck.

I had four weeks off work but wish I had taken the six weeks I could have. I didn't factor the total exhaustion I felt the weeks following the surgery. I started feeling I had more energy around week six. I think it depends on the job you do and how active you are during the day.

I have been off three weeks. I have to go back tomorrow. I wish I had more time because I'm totally exhausted just doing small things around the house. Can't imagine how I'm gonna be at work. My energy level is so low.

This question is asked often and I think it varies quite a bit. Everyone responds differently.

I had RNY on 1/23 and returned to my desk job on 1/30. I had planned on working from home the 2nd week but I felt ready to go back.

Again, we all respond differently so there is no one answer fits all, really.

Best of luck on your new journey.

My doc typically wants his patients off work for 4 weeks, but told him I could only do 2. Technically I was off for 2 1/2 weeks as my surgery was on a Wednesday. I went back to work last week. I too have a desk job but am not up/down that often. It wasn't so bad but still felt very tired. The exhaustion really is the bigger battle than any pain I ever experienced. My energy levels are slowly getting better and better. My only complication this week was that I caught a cold so that's had me wiped out on top of everything else. Work wise it's been fine. I was stir crazy after being at home for that long so it did me better to get back to work.

I'm a vet tech. On my feet all day, bending, squatting, lifting, 10+ hour days. Surgery on Friday. Back to work the next Friday. Couldn't lift more than 20 pounds for 3 weeks but had no problems working. I would have been bored stiff hanging out at home for longer.

P.S.....I asked my doctor how long he thought I should take off and he said one week.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
