They say nay, but I'm a daredevil and I love gum. Do at your own risk. The complications are just that it can be really hard on your new stomach to digest (since gum is already hard to digest) in the off chance that you swallow it, and since you have a staple line, it can get stuck and it's probably not a pretty picture, but I don't routinely swallow gum and I'm not sure of anyone who does.

Lots of people chew and swallow gum! (surprisingly) - I'm one of them, which is why I almost never chew gum. I think the problem with chewing gum is it can let in a lot of air and give you a gassy feeling in your gut. It's a definite no-no on my post-op plan, not that I was planning on chewing any (see above). ;-)

I used to chew gum all the time. However, I was definitely advised against it on my post-op plan. For me, I made some lifestyle changes in conjunction with the surgery. I figured the risk of swallowing gum and causing problems with my surgery (and the time energy and money invested )was not worth the temporary pleasure benefit of chewing a stick of gum. Because of that I'm OK with not chewing gum and can have a happy life without it by focusing on other things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
