Hello, I saw my PCP yesterday for a routine check. I'm about 9 weeks post-op and won't have my first set of labs done with my surgeon until next month. Well, my PCP did a urine test and it shows that I have Protein, Calcium, bilirubin, and ketones in my urine. I'm not surprised by the ketones since I'm obviously eating a low carb diet so am in ketosis. I've never had any kidney issues before and my blood works shows I'm not dehydrated/electrolytes are fine.

I've lost 50 pounds since I started my pre-op diet (so over the course of 10 weeks). I'm thrilled with the results so far but worried that the rapid weight loss has affected my kidneys. I messaged my surgeon but haven't heard back yet and my PCP just said to increase my fluids and she'll retest me in a week. Does anyone have any experience with this?

As someone with a hubby with PKD urine tests are normal for us so I've got experience here.

Protein can be a sign of issues in large amounts but bilirubin is more signs of liver issues.

Could honestly be no issue and will be clear next test but better to get checked.

Oh bilirubin in urine is what detected my gallbladder as its a sign the bile is blocked.

I'm 7 weeks post op and had a urine test yesterday actually. I had bilirubin in mine as well, ketones, but no Protein. My doctor said that it wasn't wildly high so he thinks it will be fine the next time. Ketones for Keto diet is normal as well. He said the liver (I had a fatty liver) could be healing and the numbers may fluctuate in my urine for awhile.
In my blood work my AST and ALT which have been high (also related to my fatty liver) have lowered!! Yay! Still high, but improving. He thinks by 6 months out my liver may have completely healed itself. That's exciting! I hope for you it's the same and nothing serious, good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I've had my gallbladder removed years ago so know it's not that. But I've also had a high ALK phosphate level for years. I had a liver ultrasound last year and it was fine but seeing the bilirubin pop up in my urine scared me. I'm thinking my liver is just "under construction" and is adjusting like you said.

I'm not sure what's up with the Protein showing up though. I thought maybe it was something that a lot of post-sleevers have encountered. Hopefully if I increase my fluids, next week's urine test will look better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
