They want your lungs to be good. Try chantix..if your ins.wont pay go to a quit smoking class and ask if they have it. Sometimes you can get for free.

You need to think long and hard about smoking vs. surgery. Those are two gigantic life changes you are trying to accomplish at the same time.

It is really important that smoking stays out of your life forever after surgery.

Most people need help quitting. Chantix, family and friends' support, smoking cessation programs.. all these might help.

Even if you need to delay the surgery to accomplish quitting for good, it will be worth it! (And if you think the cravings will be better after surgery, they won't. The cravings will probably be worse.)

You. can. do. this. !!

Just make sure you WANT to quit more than you want that cigarette. If you do? Then that desire, combined with external help, will get you there!

Sometimes you have to sit and ask yourself what is more important my health or that cigarette. I was told I had high blood pressure and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I smoked for over 20 yrs. When I started having health problems I quit cold turkey and did not hesitate to take charge of my health and now I'm having my surgery. Feb 2 made 2 years without smoking and I do not miss it.

You can do this...
Good luck

I'm 12 days with no smokes and I get you. From what I read, even though vaping may have zero nicotine, it contains other chemicals that effect you the same way (blood, oxygen, healing). I second the suggestion of asking for chantix

I smoked for 20 years and quit two years ago by vaping. I stepped down to 0 mg and then stopped vaping.

With that being said I love smoking. If I knew it wouldn't eventually take my legs I'd be smoking while I type this.

You do need to tackle smoking first. The stress and the changes are going to make you want to smoke even more.

If you have any mental health history do not take Chantix.

Yay! I have 16 days down myself. I am technically able to go in and test tomorrow but I'm really debating it. I can't start my classes until I test clean, so I want to hurry and get it done. But if I fail, I have to wait another 30 days...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
