Atkins Protein Powders/Shakes

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what you are using for Protein powders. I read some research which said that Atkins Protein Powders were as good as any others when undergoing bariatric surgery. I am a bit baffled but there it was.

Can anyone offer me any insights regarding this? Atkins is a lot cheaper than other protein powders so if it is ok I would use that as it is readily available through supermarkets rather than having to order things on-line.

I was using Atkins shakes before my surgery, so I think I'll try to use them up, but I don't think they're as high in Protein as many of the other recommended Meal Replacements, so I also ordered another Protein powder. But that's just me :)

My nut advised that the Protein is not as readily absorbable by your body, and not complete nutrition. Also, Atkins oftens adds sugar alcohols which she also said to stay away from. They are more difficult to digest and can cause diarrhea. She said Atkins products are OK occasionally, but not to rely on it for my main sources of Protein, like shakes. I buy my protein from GNC instead of online, in case that helps you. Best of luck.

I drink the Atkins Lift Protein drinks and my NUT said that they are a good choice since I cannot stomach shakes. 20g of whey Protein and 0 sugars.

I drink Muscle Milk, 20 g of Protein and no sugar. I get the coffee variety pack and have them every morning, mixed about half and have with my Kurig Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce coffee (iced.) Oh em gee! Soooo good! I'm not sure my NUT would agree, but I'm also almost a year out and haven't seen her since I discovered this yumminess.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
