Lap Band Removal - Need Some Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am writing to you because I needed to get some advice. Last week I had my lap band removed due to some complications and thus decided to have it removed. I got my band 6 years ago and have lost 60lbs and was able to maintain it for four years. However, now that I have the band removed I have forgotten how life was before the band, which is a bit scary. Thankfully, since the removal I have lost weight, but I ams still nervous to eat too much because I may gain weight. With that said, my question is it possible to lost weight after the lapband removal, or is weight gain always going to happen?

Sorry if this is all over the place.

I appreciate any advice that you can provide.

Thank you

Hi Ash,

I'm in the position as you.
I had mine for 6 years as well and lost 30kg/66lbs.
I had mine out last month as it slipped and I lost weight the first 2 weeks and felt amazing but have put on a few kgs/lbs since.
I'm good at Breakfast and lunch then crave food after dinner.

A part of me wants to prove to myself I can do this on my own and another part wants to get the gastric sleeve.

I have been looking online for success after band removal but I can't see much... maybe I can create my own success story.

Good luck with your new chapter.

Hi nhelena86,

Thank you for your reply.

It's nice to hear that I am not alone in this area. It's so scary and I am not sure what to do yet. As of now I don't crave anything, but I don't know how I will be in a few weeks. I still do Protein shakes because I do like how they help me from eating anything unnecessary (pre and post lap band removal). Have you tried doing a Protein shake after dinner? Not sure if it would help, but maybe....

I don't want to have another surgery, but I get where you are coming from because you have worked so hard and don't want it all to go to waste. I just mentally can't take another surgery and being out from work and such.

I am going to try losing weight without surgery, and see how it goes. Just like you said, maybe we can create our own success stories :-).

Let me know if you ever want a weightloss buddy :-)

Good luck as well, I know you will do amazingly well.

Aww thank-you! Yes I will try a Protein shake tonight if I crave sweets.

I called my insurance company and Im covered for the sleeve, but I'm not sure if I could really get another surgery either.

Knowing someone else is going through this too gives me some motivation/inspiration.

Would love a weight loss buddy to be accountable too, Ill pm you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
