The heartburn is real :(

Recommended Posts

Title pretty much says it all. I had surgery Dec 9th, 2016 so I'm a little over 2 months out.

I was prescribed Omeprazole which I have been taking religiously every morning on an empty stomach. I also take one small capsule of a different medication before bed, which I've been doing for a year and never been a problem.

Despite that, since the surgery I've had five or six nights when I've woken up due to the horrific, painful heartburn I was experiencing. I take a couple Rolaids or a generic OTC acid neutralizer (cant remember the name) and they work wonders. Usually gone half an hour later.

Last night was absolutely awful. Nothing helped and laying down actually made it worse, so I ended up sleeping (for like 3 hours) sitting on the couch. My stomach felt like it was contracting and when it did that, I would experience a sharp pain that would slowly decrease until the next contraction (same idea as labor, for those of you who are parents). This lasted for about 45 minutes when I guess I eventually fell asleep.

This morning the acid was still present, but at least the Rolaids helped. Still there, but significantly lessened. I've never had a heartburn episode that lasted this long.

Since I'm already taking Omeprazole and have tried OTC remedies, what comes next? Increase Omeprazole dose?

Btw, my worst fear about having the sleeve was developing heartburn that was so bad that I ended up having to convert to bypass.

:(

I am sorry that it's gotten worse!

Yes you may need yo up your meds. Or switch to new meds like Protonix or Dexliant.

Ultimately you need to advise your surgeon and they can do further tests.

I understand if nothing works. The Final solution Is a revision to gastric bypass.

All the best

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
