OPINIONS PLEASE: On weight loss competitions

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have lost 110 pounds (give or take depending on the day) since my lapband surgery. I have really been struggling lately to lose more. It has come to a point where I know I need to change my whole lifestyle if I want to reach my goal weight. SO, I have signed up for a local gym's weight loss competition. I talked to the owner first about my lapband and he ok'd me signing up. However, I know someone else in the competition who of the very few people that know, happens to know I had the surgery. SHould they say anything, I feel people might get upset...especially if I actually WON (there are 60 people in the competition). Maybe it ISN'T fair....what do you all think??????

I was going to try out for that uhm.. Biggest Loser.

I wasn't going to tell them I had lap-band and just WOW everyone.

Haha.. I wouldn't really want to be on TV, but it was a thought.

Since technically there are people who don't lose weight with the band.. because YOU have to utilize it.. and the people in charge don't care.. then it doesn't matter.

As long as the "officials" don't have a prolem with it, who cares?

Weightloss challenges should never be about the win. They're about the process. No prize can equal improved health.

I say go for it, you're going to improve your health and really do major good stuff for yourself along the way.

The odds of 1/60 aren't bad, but I'd worry about hurting other people's feelings at the end, not now. And if the owners know the deal you're don't need to borrow trouble wondering about the other competetor's issues.

I used to cover The Biggest Loser for a magazine--I wrote recaps of the episodes and an opinion column. I did a local "biggest loser" program at a gym and did not have a lot of success.

I do better walking.

Personally, I think you ought to go for it. You and I know that you can gain weight very easily with the lap band if you eat the wrong foods. working out and eating healthy is the way to go. Since the owner knows and ok'd it. Go for it! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
