biglady904 65 Posted February 14, 2017 Because I have no idea I feel like I'm messing up, because my nutritionist just tells me I can eat what I want as long as it's low in carbs and fat, but if I find something low in carbs it's high in fat and vice versa Like today I have a strong craving for tacos and I know I can't have it So please can I have some advice ? Or am I overthinking it ?
Armygalbonnie 643 Posted February 14, 2017 It can all be very confusing!! Are you still trying to lose weight or are you at maintenance? I think that will make a huge difference. You are right that it's hard to find options that are both low in carbs and fats. Sometimes we have to create our own recipes. I saw one recently that looks really good, that might help you with your taco craving. I saw where someone took cheddar cheese and spread it out on parchment paper. They put it in the microwave and melted it. Then they laid the melted cheese on the paper, over an upside down bowl. The cheese hardened and formed like a bowl. After it hardens, fill the "cheese bowl" with all the ingredients used for a taco. I'll see if I can find the recipe and attach it. Armygalbonnie 643 Posted February 14, 2017 Here's a different way it is made: Method: Heat a large non-stick sauté pan over medium heat. Evenly sprinkle your grated cheese around the base of the pan. Depending on the size of your pan, you may need to occasionally adjust the pan over the burner, to ensure that it cooks evenly (this means moving the pan around the burner ... one side may cook quickly, so move the side that ISN'T cooking quickly over the center of the burner to catch it up, etc.) Continue to cook over low-medium heat. The cheese will melt and melt together. It will eventually begin to fry and darken. Once the cheese has a firm "crispy" look to it, but before it burns, pry it out with a heat resistant plastic spatula and IMMEDIATELY drape it over an upside-down bowl. It should form to the shape of the bowl and quickly begin to harden. Allow it to rest for a few minutes, or until it's sufficiently chilled. Repeat the process to make more cheese bowls! Armygalbonnie 643 Posted February 14, 2017 WOW, that's awesome!!! You have done a great job! I have about 25 more to go. I still stick to those foods that I know I'm comfortable with, and I haven't been too adventurous.
j16 166 Posted February 14, 2017 I make "tacos" all the time. I just skip the taco shell and have the shredded beef, low fat black refried Beans with cheese and salsa on top 1 biglady904 reacted to this

Airstream88 361 Posted February 14, 2017 My NUT allows 2 multigrain carbs servings a day so I use multigrain taco shells and multigrain tortillas (6" size).
Candygyrl 637 Posted February 14, 2017 I am at 7 mos. My nutritionist gave me the indication I could eat what I wanted as well. Within reason of course. She provided me with a list of typical fast food restaurants and food suggestions including their calorie content, Protein etc. She reinforced the importance of pairing my carbs with a Protein and encouraged whole grains whenever possible. It really does depend on your goals. I am trying to slow my weight loss therefore, I would allow myself a Taco if I want one. I have eaten tacos. I can usually only eat 1. Preferrably I make my own. I use the tortilla shell but I may use ground turkey, extra veggies (lettuce/tomato), a little cheese and sour cream. Then that would be it. I wouldn't have another taco for weeks if I didn't think about it. I think about what I've eaten up to this point. I feel that for the most part I've developed some pretty good habits so I try to stay on track with those principles. Eating every 3 -4 hours. Protein first, then incorporate veggies and fruits throughout the day and in between meals along with other snack ideas like nuts, cheese, yogurt. Along with getting in daily fluids. No meals after 7 except special occasions which fall every blue moon. I still can't eat very much and I don't try to. If I was only able to eat a portion of my salmon and broccoli, I put it away and have it during another meal. I don't try to wait 45 min- 1hr and then finish it off. I can see people getting in trouble this way. it can lead to overeating. Walk away, wait 3-4 hours have it for dinner. 1 TexasguyEP reacted to this
Chez2812 46 Posted February 15, 2017 I have the LB and I still struggle with meat so I tend not to eat it much as its not worth the pain but besides that I can pretty much eat what I want if I wanted to. on saying that my diet consists mainly of salads. if I was to want a taco I would use turkey mince instead of beef and just try to have the healthiest version of it possible. normally for days after my fills i kinda revert back to the mushie foods i had to have at the start but then back to normal after that. leebick 448 Posted March 5, 2017 I had sleeve surgery in Sept 2016, so I am about 6 months post-surgery. I eat pretty much what I want, within reason, but I don't eat much; I just can't. I try to keep my meals high Protein, low/no carb, and don't worry too much about the fat. I still eat many of the things I used to eat, but in such a different quantity, and far more infrequently. Last week on chicken wing night (50 cents each for buffalo wings) I at 3 wings (sections, not whole chicken wings) instead of the 15-20 I used to consume. Tonight we had pizza for dinner; I had 2 pieces, but ate only the toppings. I used to eat at least a half of a large pizza, if not more, toppings, crust, and all. If I wanted a taco (and sometimes I do!), I'd break a shell into pieces and use the pieces as a scoop to eat the meat and toppings- or skip the shell entirely and just have some meat, cheese, lettuce/tomato/onion, with maybe a little sour cream and salsa. However, I can only eat about 1/3 of a cup of food at one time, so I'd be really careful to eat slowly. My daily meals look something like this: For Breakfast, I usually have a Protein Shake made with unsweetened almond milk, and a cup of coffee with about 2T half-n-half. snack time at school (around 10:15) I'll have a slice of cheese. For lunch I have dinner leftovers- something like some roasted veggies with chicken (about 1/3 cup total), or 2-3 mini-meatballs (1" in diameter maybe, the frozen ones) with some shredded mozzarella. If I'm hungry when I get home from school (around 4), I'll have a glass of almond milk or maybe a 4oz yogurt, or 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. Dinner (around 7:30, after my husband gets home) is protein with roasted veggies (about 1/3 cup total). I don't usually have dessert, but if my husband is having ice cream (my big weakness), I might have 1/4 cup. If I'm hungry before bedtime (usually go to sleep around midnight) and haven't had dessert, I'll have a tablespoon of Peanut Butter. Dinner Proteins include fish, chicken (1/2 to 1 thigh is all I can eat), or deli roll-ups (1-2 slices of ham or deli roast beef with some shredded cheese melted on it). I can eat pork if it's not too dry (or cooked in a sauce), lamb (which we only have 1-2 times a year), and eggs (omelet or fried, not scrambled). Burger doesn't go down too easily, and sausage is hard to digest (but I love sausage so it's a struggle!). Haven't tried hot dogs but I'm sure I'll get there! Steak also doesn't go down easily, which is heartbreaking for me, but I'm optimistic it'll happen- I LOVE STEAK!!! I miss salad, but if I have a salad I can't eat anything else- fills me up too much. Same with raw veggies or fruit; if I eat them, I can't get my protein in. I still have to avoid drinking 30 mins prior to or after meals, which makes it hard to drink enough as I eat 5-6 times a day. I feel like I am definitely still a work in progress, but I'm still losing weight, so I guess it's all good!
