Driving after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Just curious on how soon after surgery were some of you able to begin driving again ?

I'm currently at stay at home mom but I do a lot of driving on a day to day basis.

Having my surgery in 1 week.

I was asked to hold off for seven days. Didn't have an issue driving once I started.

I had a prolonged hospital stay because of some complications, but I drove myself about 1 week after surgery. The main reason they didn't want me driving was if I was taking my pain meds. Physically it didn't bother me getting in/out of my van at all. The biggest thing is simply wearing down quickly and the lack of energy. I was stir crazy and wanted to get out of the house but found that I couldn't go out for very long without running out of steam.

My doctor said as soon as I stop taking the pain killers which was quick because I only took them for two days. You'll know when you feel up to it.

Once you can do an emergency break without pain here. Insurance can be void if your drive under influence of meds etc and against medical advice.

I was told I would be cleared at my 10 day appointment. I live alone and I refuse to ask someone to leave work to drive me to that appt (I'm way too independent and stubborn). If I feel okay and am off pain meds I may be a rebel and drive before cleared. 10 days seems crazy, especially when everyone else pretty much has the "after pain meds" rule.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
