Does the band ever need to be replaced years later?

Recommended Posts

Can any tell me if a band over a LARGE period of years will need to be replaced? Most surgery techniques don't last a lifetime, kind of like face-lifts & veneers. Also can anyone tell me who has had the band in place for over a few years or the longest? I would love to know of any longterm problems. Thank you so very much. I am hoping to be banded in a few mnths.

This is a great question.

When several of us bandsters gathered in Galveston a few weeks back, this was something that was brought up. None of us knew the answer. Not sure if the band has been around longterm (10+ years) for ANY of us to know the answer.

But Ive wondered the same thing.

I just wanted to acknowledge your post. So, like you, Ill wait for others to reply. :)

I am uncertain on this too! I haven't been banded yet either. Hoping I will in Jan. or Feb. Answers to long term questions like this will make everyone feel better...

The band has been used in Europe since 1993. I do believe there are some people overseas who have much longer experience than those of us in the US. Jessie Ahroni, a PhD Nurse Practitioner who wrote the first book released on the LapBand and who has had hers for about 6 years has said it's meant to last a lifetime. This silicone is one of those things they don't want in the landfills due to the inability of decomposition over years. That being said, I've also seen her say that no one REALLY knows how long it will last and it would definitely have to do with how well it was maintained by each person and any complications one might endure. I think it will be a very individual thing, but, like Jessie, I'd replace it every year if I had to and if I could find a way insurance/money-wise to do it.

Welcome to the group!

Hi All,

Merry Xmas from the uk !.

One person i talk to on a regular basis has had a lap band fitted since 1999 and had no problems with it what so ever. She has recently had it changed to a Mid Band as these are a new design and has less potential long term problems. In Europe the Mid band has become very popular do to the less time on fluids only ( 2-3 days, not 3-4 weeks ) also it is a lot more adjustable and flexible to fit

If you require any more info, just Ask

Hope this helps

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
