Foul smelling burps and vomit (feces)

Recommended Posts

Hello, I had my surgery on the 18th of January. I have been hospitalized twice due to bowel obstruction. One of the main symptoms I experienced was some really really foul smelling burps and vomit. Literally, they smelled like feces. After my first bowel obstruction was cleared, I was good for about 2 days. Then the foul burps came back, along with the vomit. I went back to the hospital for the second time, another obstruction was cleared. I went in on the 10th of February for the second clearance. The burps aren't that bad but you can faintly still smell the "feces" can this mean that I have another obstruction or can it mean that my tummy still has some residue of that bile and it is trying to get rid of it. Any one experiencing this issue or has experienced it in the past. Do you guys know any who had this problem? If so what was the out come? Dr. Says if I don't get better, we'll reverse the surgery in 3 month, something I'm not to happy about, since I'm going to be suffering for 3 months by that time. My suffering is going to be in vain! Please I hope I find some one who has had these issues and is doing better! I am still on puréed and liquid diet right now. Not about to start messing with solids. Please, someone give me some hope!

As a nurse I know an obstruction is not to be taken lightly. Yes you are right about the feces smell. The vomit actually looks like feces. I wonder if they had an NG tube down you at all to help remove all the bile? Seems like your intestines are twisting for whatever reason. I feel horrible for you as this cannot be easy to deal with on top of your surgery as well. I do know the intestines can correct themselves on their own. I'm curious as to why the doctors feel this is happening? I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! Hang in there.

I am sorry this is happening. Get a second opinion before going back under the knife. Always more minds on something is good.

Hector I'm praying this too shall pass. I had obstructions for years. And everything you're talking about happen to me. However, it wasn't related to my weightloss surgery. My advise would be to get a second opinion if it reoccurs.[emoji120]

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
