Phoinixe 13 Posted February 12, 2017 Hi! I've just joined. I'm from Long Beach CA and I'm having surgery at Kaiser Harbor City on March 20. I did an orientation and nutrition class with Dr. LePort's office in Orange county last August but then had to switch insurance. I met with Dr. Zane at Kaiser for the 1st time last week and he put me on the schedule for next month and told me I have to lose weight, shooting for 30 pounds, by March 15. I wasn't given a diet to follow aside from drinking a 160 calorie Protein Shake for dinner each night. I went home in a panic and researched pre-op diets. I'm flying blind! I've cut down carbs and fat as far as possible (no bread, rice, Pasta, quinoa, cerals, grains tortillas etc. And no butter, vegetable oil and little olive oil). I've cut all soda, sugar, carbonated beverages and caffeine, too. I'm eating about 800-1000 calories a day and drinking at least a half gallon of Water. Is being dropped into the deep end like this normal? Is there a better way to drop this much weight this fast? Cheers!
TammyLee66 152 Posted February 12, 2017 Well I started 1st with my doctor and then she referred me so I could have an orientation after my orientation they scheduled my 1st class of 12 and the way it works where I am at you have to attend all 12 classes and during that time you get all your preop stuff done, bloodwork EKG's psych and some more and then once the 12 weeks is up then a 1-2 weeks later you meet with the surgeon and then they schedule you for surgery they told us sometimes the surgeon might want you to lose 5 or 10 more pounds but all during the 12 week class we are supposed to lose 10% of her body mass. So did you have to take 12 weeks of classes or just one nutrition class 1 Phoinixe reacted to this
TammyLee66 152 Posted February 12, 2017 As far as losing weight you sound like you're on a right amount of calorie intake I'm just trying to lose my weight in between my classes and that's about the calorie intake I'm taking in plus I'm walking about 4 miles a day 1 Phoinixe reacted to this
Phoinixe 13 Posted February 12, 2017 Hi Tammy! I took 1 all day orientation and nutrition class and then switched to Kaiser. I have not done a 12 week class. I met with my Kaiser surgeon last week for the first time (I was referred by my new Kaiser PCP). I brought my paperwork from the previous surgeon's office and the new surgeon, Dr. Zane, put me on the schedule for March 20. I'm relieved to know I'm following approximately what I should be and I'm hopeful I'll lose enough to satisfy the surgeon. I'm a little unclear as to why I'm skipping so many steps but I do know my blood pressure is extremely high so I figured that was the reason for the hurry. I'm going to call the office Monday and get some clarification.
TammyLee66 152 Posted February 12, 2017 That definitely is a good idea call Kaiser or your doctors office like I said I have never heard of someone especially just switching insurance to not have to take the options class but maybe they're allowing you to not take it since you're already have done other steps. Let me know what you find out I'm curious and it will be nice to follow you on your journey I'm not far behind if you don't have to take the classesTammy
Phoinixe 13 Posted February 15, 2017 Update! All is well. My situation is unique to me and I've gotten some advice re: my pre-op diet. I need to kick up the working out a notch and increase my calories a touch. 1 TammyLee66 reacted to this
