Sleeve vs Bypass, fighting my sweet tooth on preop diet

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I am currently going through my previous open 6 month medically supervised wrought loss program. My PCP started me on 1500 calories. Low carb, high protien, high Fiber which was suggested by my surgeon. I weigh 285 so this is quite a change for me. I currently eat mostly vegan foods so I do get the correct amount of Protein. I have stopped eating vegan cheese, lowered my consumption of vegan sour cream, no longer drink pop. Eating more whole grains and omitting when possible. I have felt hungry most of the day. I am drinking Water and tea also to try and combat the feeling of hunger and get used to the recommended 64oz. I am also extremely tired most of the day. Because I'm hungry so much and not allowed to have sweets I have been eating says a few times a week sometimes overeating. Now I am having strong urges or cravings at times for sweets.

I know that surgery is not a magic pill so I am very nervous about this problem. I want to be able to work out and try to lose some weight now to be in better shape for surgery, and that's hard when you feel hungry and fatigued all day.

I was decided on getting the sleeve but I am now wondering if I should get the bypass? I decided against bypass due to more Vitamin deficiency and dumping syndrome.

Did anyone else have this problem before surgery, especially the sweet tooth problem, and did it affect your weight loss after surgery?

My first meeting with my surgeon is March 3rd so I will be discussing this with him but I would love some personal views/ advice.

Thank you

It doesn't matter which surgery you choose. There is no guarantee you will dump so choosing bypass won't save you from sweets.

Find sugar free sweet replacements. I have sweets all the time but I don't eat sugar. My sweets are Protein bars, Protein brownies, cream cheese withe stevia that ends up tasting like cheesecake.

You have to think of long term solutions to the things you like. This is a life long thing, not a diet to squeeze into a bridesmaid dress.

There is nothing wrong with replacements. Most of them are expensive and scarce so that will naturally keep you from over indulging.

I had the same problem. I have finished my 6 months and during the 6 months I was amazing. I ate right, made healthy choices and I was just really trying. I would eat something sweet but in a small portion once every other month.

Everything changed when I got approved (Jan 25th) . IDK. Something in me was like, "lets eat it all before we do the liquid diet. Lets do it now." I know it is just me telling myself that it is okay because once I get surgery, I may never be able to eat this stuff again.

Some days are easier than others. My suggestion is small portions. If you fight the cravings too much you may end up like me binge eating junk food some times and feeling guilty about it.

Now that we are half way through Feb, my self control is back. My body is starting to reject junk food. My mind does not want it anymore. I think it is because my surgery date is at the end of March.

I had gastric sleeve in 10/2013 and even with following the diet plan I still felt hungry, cravings don't go away and the sleeve allows slider foods and sweets to go down without complications and I now have GERD. I lost 63 lbs of the 100 lbs I needed to lose and have slowly been creeping back up. I am in the beginning stages of having a sleeve to bypass revision. Only you know what's best for your situation but I just wanted to share my experience. Good luck.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
