justme55 2 Posted February 11, 2017 Had gastric bypass on 1/30, went home Feeling great, within two days ended up in ER with severe pain and had second surgery for blocked bowel. Was discharged in a couple of days, came home to recover, and doing fair. Having severe muscle spasms from two surgeries in less than a week, issues with Constipation, and struggling to get anything past my lips. The potassium supplement I am supposed to take 2X daily are too large to swallow. I cut them up and took in pieces, then threw them up. I crushed and put in applesauce which tasted terrible and also didn't work. I dissolved in small amount of tea. Nope that didn't work either. How can I possibly get enough potassium if I cannot stomach the supplements? Regretting my decision? Absolutely! Sent from my iPad using BariatricPal
amyjane79 39 Posted February 11, 2017 I hate to hear that! Did you reach out to your doctors office? What were their suggestions? ~Amy
justme55 2 Posted February 11, 2017 I did reach out to my doctor's office. They suggested crushing them and mixing them with pudding or applesauce or dissolving in tea. I just can't tolerate the taste. Sent from my iPad using BariatricPal

_Kate_ 2,224 Posted February 12, 2017 Have you looked into having Patches rather than tablets? 1 justme55 reacted to this
justme55 2 Posted February 12, 2017 Thanks for the tips. Will try each one to find something that works for me. _Kate_ I was not aware of the availability of Potassium Patches, but will certainly be asking my doctor about them! Thank you all so much. Any tips for fluids? Right now I am getting a couple of popsicles down per day, trying Water, crystal light, Power Zero, flavored waters, and tea. Ugh! When do things start tasting better? jc2232 2 Posted February 12, 2017 See if there is a compounding pharmacy in your area. They can use powdered potassium and make it into liquid form. You would just have to have your Dr. write a prescription for it.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App 1 justme55 reacted to this
fuzzy1972 11 Posted February 12, 2017 You should talk to your Dr about anti-nausea meds. Also mint Decaf green tea may help,it helped me, I was sleeved on 1/30. I can't give advice on potassium cause I'm not on them. Sorry hope the other things help.Sent from my SM-N910V using BariatricPal mobile app 2 amyjane79 and Pazza reacted to this
sherri~ 77 Posted February 13, 2017 The potassium: All I can say is do your best to take those pills in whatever way you can because I've had IV potassium and it kills your veins....seriously burns like you're on fire, and now I can't have blood tests in my right arm. Not trying to scare you...but I've been there, done that, and it was a nightmare. 4 years ago and I can still feel the pain 2 justme55 and Babsbeh reacted to this
Moonbabe 13 Posted February 13, 2017 Hi justme55, I had complications from my rny also, including running temperatures of 105 just days after surgery, I had several leaks in my new stomach pouch and small intestine. I ended up with Peritonitis and a 6 week stay in the hospital then 3 months of bedrest with feeding tube, chest tube and abdominal drain. 1 year later it seems like it was a bad dream. Yesterday I just hit 134 lbs when I started at 284. I still have problems with eating certian items (making me throw up) and the list is growing, I know that greasy food like chinese or spicy like bbq are a definate nono. Plus all beef items and most pork are on nono list. Onestradon is a generic for Zofran and is my best friend. 2 tablets in the morning when I feel nausea and it keeps me from hurling. Sending all the gentle hugs your way for your journey. Just let me know if youneed to talk. 1 M@E reacted to this
justme55 2 Posted February 13, 2017 So sorry to hear of your struggles, Moonbabe. I'm doing a bit better with the nausea issue now. I'm hoping after all of this, the payoff makes me feel like it was worth it. My high was 268, currently 248, and goal of 140. After hearing of your experience, I feel blessed that I'm doing as well as I am. Hugs and blessings to you, and congratulations on the 134 mark. I hope that somehow makes it seems worth the journey. blondie66 271 Posted February 18, 2017 It's still early days hopefully things will turn around. I didn't take potassium not sure what Its for...it's interesting the variety of experiences and post op procedures. If I could change anything about my surgery 18 months post op. Is I would have done it sooner. 2 amyjane79 and justme55 reacted to this
