Diet after gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

I was looking to get some ideas of meals everyone ate after gastric bypass. I will be having my surgery in a few months and want to start eating exactly how I will be eating after my surgery now. Thanks!

Doesn't your surgeon have a Nutritionist working with him/her? If you have the opportunity to meet with a Bariatric nutritionist, I highly recommend it. Mine required me to attend classes to prepare me for eating right after bypass and then again prior to transitioning to real food. My program is 5 mini meals a day , every 3 - 4 hours, to include low fat Protein, 2 multigrain carbs and 2 fruit servings daily, and healthy fats.

There are a few different blogs out there and I really like the world according to egg face. She is several years out from surgery and has a lot of good ideas.

I think also it will be up to your body. I eat a lot of salads, mostly cesar salads with chicken or salmon cut up on it. I have a friend that had the same surgery, and she can't even eat one piece of lettuce without getting sick. You will find out what works for you and what doesn't. I try to stick to clean eating.

I eat regular, home cooked meals with my family. I just skip the carbs. If we're having spaghetti, I pour sauce over miracle noodles for myself. Roast chicken and mashed potatoes? I just make mashed cauliflower for everyone.

I eat three meals a day, and my family eats the same. I just eat mindfully and eat less.

Whats miracle noodles?

They are shiritaki noodles. They have almost no calories.

They don't taste great on their own, but used as a substitute for rice or Pasta with a strong- flavored sauce they're good. I eat them with spaghetti sauce, curry, bibimbap...basically anywhere the taste is less important than texture.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
