Help! Left collarbone pain after VSG (NOT gas!!).

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 1/6 and ever since then, I've had a severe sharp, stabbing pain in my left collarbone area. My doctor also repaired an inguinal hernia during my sleeve surgery. This pain is NOT the same as the gas pains, which came and are long gone. I talked to my Dr about this during my 1 week follow up and he said to keep an eye on it... but when I saw the nurse practitioner for my 1 month follow up she didn't seem too concerned about it.

I'm not having any shortness of breath or dizziness, my only other symptom relevant to this is that my left shoulder appears to be a little swollen. I took some of the painkillers I had left over from surgery (Percocet) and it didn't even touch it, but the muscle relaxer I am on for Migraines (Soma) seems to make it feel better. Pressure also helps it.

Did anyone have this type of pain after surgery? Does anyone know what it is or could be? I've had 3 other laparoscopic surgeries prior to this and I have NEVER felt this before.

Thanks :)

Sidenote: went from a starting weight of 247.8lbs/surgery weight of 236.6lbs down to 218.6lbs :) I was hoping to have lost a little bit more by now, but I am happy with these numbers. I also cannot stand the taste of anything fatty or sugary and the only cravings I get are for vegetables. My endocrinologist also no longer considers me pre diabetic, my blood pressure is a bit better, and my migraines have decreased dramatically. Getting sleeved, in my honest opinion, has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

It may be a joint issue that has nothing to do with the surgery (especially if it is swollen). Maybe try to get an xray or something.

I had the same problem. My doctor said it was from my arms being spread out for so long. He said give it time. I did and no more pain.

It may be acid reflux. It doesn't seem as if the two would be related, but they may be.

I sometimes have a similar pain, usually toward the end of the day, since I take my PPI first thing in the morning. It is in the same place as yours.

Try to notice when it happens - time of day? after a meal? etc

Acid reflux can really mess with you. Don't discount that option. I had terrible sharp pain and felt it on my ribcage and went up my back to my shoulder. It was acid reflux once I started taking Omepraxole it went away

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
