I was unaware until my surgeon mentioned it. I looked it up and it's pretty common. I will be discharged home with a nurse for 24hrs if I opt for outpatient

I had outpatient with my sleeve. As long as I could go to the bathroom on my own and didn't have any issues walking, I was allowed to go home. It really wasn't a big deal. Good luck!!

Thank you so much for your response . I never heard of it being outpatient. Hopefully my anxiety lessens as the date approaches.

I would LOVE to have mine as an outpatient, but I am scheduled for 1 night as long as everything is ok

So there might be some confusion on what "outpatient" means. For example, I was scheduled and admitted through the outpatient surgery center of my hospital but I stayed 24 hours in the hospital after surgery. The word outpatient did not mean that I went home the same day as my surgery. I have never heard of same day Sleeve or bypass surgery and would be frightened if a doctor tried to do that. I was fine within 24 hours but many people stay 2 or 3 nights even. You don't know what your pain level will be or if you will have complications so I wouldn't have felt comfortable going home the same day. That's something to discuss in detail with your surgeon to make sure you understand completely what's happening. Good luck!!

I'm scheduled for 24hrs too. Every "outpatient" surgery I have had was in and out the same day.

I had outpatient surgery. I was in an out within 9 hours. I was in recovery for about 45 minutes, wheeled back to my room and immediately asked for assistance to get up and go to the restroom. They filled me with 4 bags of IV fluid! I wasn't super steady so I went right back to the bed then to sit down for a moment, got my bearings and walked up and down the hall. I was released about 30 minutes after that. It was my first ever surgery so I was super nervous but it all went off without a hitch. My pain levels were really low. I only took the pain meds for about 24 hours after surgery. I went back to my docs office the next morning to remove the draining port thingy and back home for a nap. All was well. Best of luck to you!

@char3672 - so sorry, that came out wrong. [emoji16] I meant that for me when they said "outpatient" in the past it meant same day as well. My confusion with this surgery was that outpatient had nothing to do with my length of stay but rather the surgical center I was using. It is weird that's why I suggested discussing in detail what the plan is with the surgeon because I think an overnight stay is pretty common. In fact my insurance required a 24 hr stay. And even though I was admitted through outpatient services, I had a room on the 3rd floor already. I think more than anything it has to do with individual hospitals.

It's ok. I understand what you mean. I think in my heart, I KNOW it's probably the best thing to stay at least 1 night to make sure everything is ok. It's just that I have NEVER stayed overnight in the hospital. I guess I'm just worried

Oh no worries at all! They will take such good care of you and honestly I was so drugged up I don't remember most of it. I remember wanting Water and them making me get up and walk. If you are uncomfortable or in pain they give you the good good medicine so you drift peacefully off to sleep. You will do great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
