Low Vitamin D and B12 levels

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-

I am new here. I started the process about two weeks ago for Gastric Sleeve surgery. I am in the process of getting all of the testing done. I went last week to have all of my labs done and I got my results today. The results show low Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 levels. I started to get really nervous because I was not expecting that. I was expecting the high cholesterol which is something I've always struggled with.

Has anyone else had low Vitamin levels? And if so, how was it treated?

Thank you guys!

Hi Newbie, I am new as well will be attending the seminar on March 9th and consult on the 16th. I am thinking that sleeve would be great for me. As for the low Vitamin D I've dealt with that last year. My doctor put me on a pill once a week and after about 6 months it went back to normal. She said a lot of people Vitamin D is low in the Midwest due to lack of sun

Yes! My Vitamin D,B-12 and Iron were all very low.My nurse practioner immediately stareted me on meds to bring my levels up to where they need to be. I'll have my levels checked again at my next visit to make sure they've come up.Thats probably what they'll do in your case as well.I feel alot better since I started the Vitamins. Good luck on your journey!

Hi! I am going through the same thing. My Vitamin D, Iron, and B12 are all low. I am taking 50,000 mg of vitamin D every week and B12 every morning. My doctor is going to test my blood again in a few months. Like someone else said, if you live in an area where it rains more and the sun doesn't come out as much, it's more common. We live in Washington state so it's very common here.

Thank you, ladies! This is helpful. I will talk to my dr about it as well. I live in PA and it's been a pretty dark winter. I spend most of my time inside and by time I leave work it's dark again. Haha! Cannot wait for day light savings time. :)

Yes!!! I'm happy to hear it increased your energy level. I work full time and have 3 kids and I'm always tired. I'm hoping this will help with my energy as well. Thanks for responding!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
