I had surgery Monday and every time I drink some Protein Shake I get acid reflux. It has only been 4 days. Did anybody have this right after surgery but found it got better after healing?

I was prescribed Prilosec and was told I'd need it for at least the first 2 months. Trying to drink anything the first 2 weeks was hard. Getting my fluids in now. Surgery 1/18/17. 3 weeks out

I didn't take prilosec for the first month and it was hell. I almost choked to death one night when I aspirated on it. It was terrifying. And then I was coughing up acid from my lungs for over a day. It was horrific. I called my doc and apparently they forgot to tell me all about the antacids. I had to crush them for the first 3 months though because I wasn't allowed to take pills.

I also used Pepcid AC chewables. LOVED the berry Flavored ones. I used those for an On-The-Spot solution. I'm at 4 months now and just take the daily Prilosec.

Thanks for the comments. My doctor has me taking a Nexium once a day. I take it at night. But when I lay down...ugh...I get bubbles in my throat. It feels weird. Doesn't taste acidic.

I never had acid reflux or heartburn pre surgery. Maybe I'm misdiagnosing myself.

Any ideas?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
